Bands are immature white blood cells. They are usually seen when a person has an infection. Usually a person, when they have an infection, will start to produce these white blood cells in an attempt to fight the infection. In an older person whose capability to mount a defense is diminished, will have a lower than expected WBC but will show signs of an infection with an elevated band count. Other medical situations may show infection with increased band counts.
