I'm a newbie to this website but I'm so glad I have come across this site.

I had C5-6 fusion neck surgery just 5 days ago and I had so many questions on what I'm feeling. This website has helped me understand what I'm feeling is okay. I could not swallow till yesterday. Feels like a large lump in my throat and I can't swallow it down. Then realized that was due to my esophagus being moved over to get to my ruptured disk. I had shooting pain, burning, and numbness in my left arm/hand. Surgery has fixed that problem. Now I find myself very tired after only 30 mins of being up and around. Neck is super tender but I'm only 5 days out of surgery. I'm kind of an expert with fusion surgery. Last year I had to have L5-S1 in my lower back fused. This was due to my Disked ruptured and I was not able to walk all. It has been a long recovery and it feels so much better.

I thank you again for this website and for all the information I have learned. God Bless and speedy recovery to all. NIicky

Hello all

I was in a head on car crash and had a spinal fision (C3-4-5-6-7 and C7- T1 complete) and had sergery in Mar this Yr. I used the collar for 5 months have been out for 2 months. I can tell you it will get better ...not so much the sleeping as i am still having issues sleeping but you will regain your mobility as to what extent i do not know. I have lost alot of the range of motion in my neck witch most of you will still have. I will say it will be a long recovery so my Dr says I will be in recovery at least a yr before i am even able to start theropy to rebuild my body

I wish you all well in your recovery

I had no choice in the matter weather to or not to have the sergery. I am happy to be alive and can tell u first hand to be prepared its like no other sergery you will ever go through again. I hope anyone that has to have this sergery has a easy recovery. I am 46 yrs old and i had all my bone spurs removed during the sergery to insure i would not have and numbness or tingling additionally i had a 3MM cuntusion in my spinal cord.

Best to you

I had my c5&6 done in Nov 09. I am doing ok. My right side vocal chord was damaged and taking a while to heal.. Overall I am happy that I did the surgery. The bump on my neck hurts off and on. I still have problems bending my neck, lifting and standing for a period of time. I use a neck pillow from select comfort- wonderful pillow. I know people at my <a class="wiki" hrefi

I had my neck fused in 2006 on c-2 c-4, the pain got worse and the doctor recommended I get my neck totaled fused c-2 c-7. The pain in my arms and legs went away and now I am having pain in my neck and shoulders. I have had local trigger point shots, I have had deep injections and now I am going to get a c1-c2 bilateral facet radio frequency ablation. The past four years has been hell for me and I wish I could redo what the doctor screwed up. I was at 120% mobility and now I am at 40%. It hurts when I move my head or any activity I do. I wish I could turn back the clock and live with the pain I had before then what I am feeling now

It's worth it. I had c 5 6 and 7 done two weeks ago, the pain in my left arm and scapula are better, the pain goes away and comes back which is what i was told it would do. have the surgery before you permanently damage your nerves and don't receive relief.

Hi,
I have been on all sorts of painkillers since march 11, for severe/spasming pains in my left arm. I was diagnosed with a slipped disc in my neck with nerve impingement.  I have never had pain like it!  Today i went to see neurosurgeon regarding this.  Th MRI scan showed discs c5/6 6/7 bulging.  He offered me 2 choices, 1 being to reduce the meds and see how the pain went, if it didn't go then he would be happy to operate and remove them and fuse the bones.
What are the chances the pain has gone if the disc is still pressing on it???  Can anyone tell me their experiences of this?
Many Thanks

The pain will not go away until you have something surgical done to it.  Doing anything like PT or epidural injections into the area will only put a temp band-aid on it, if it helps at all.  I had anterior cervical fusion on c5 and c6/7 on June 7, after a couple of days in the hospital recovering I told the doctor that I think it was definatly the right thing to do.  I have had problems for the last 3 yrs and it only kept getting worse until the surgery.  I had a donor disc and didn't go with them taking bone from my hip because that just make for a LONGER recovery.  The only problem I have had since surgery is the lump in my throat and that is from swelling due to them going in thru the front of the neck and they have to move your esophgus n they intubate you during surgery and oh I found out that Im allergice to latex (ouchy and itchyyyyyy) but other then that I strongly recommend the surgery and do it befor it is too late and too much nerve damage is done.  That is only going to prolong your recovery.  I wish you the best of luck!

I just had a C6-C7 fusion, I'm  a young wrestler i had my surgery about 8 weeks ago now. i herniated my disc severally wrestling i lost all function to my left arm and pectoral. i had to wear a brace for 6 weeks, i got cleared to go back to light drilling and lifting weights again. i feel like a baby though with the amount of weight i have to use when benching or doing triceps, going from a bench of 350 to barley getting 100lbs is a bit mentally draining. But the rest of my body still seams to be fairly strong still, i did ride a bike everyday as hard as i could for 30 min starting 3 days after surgery. i can notice my left side is weaker though when doing pull ups and things. As far as wrestling i haven't been cleared to go live yet but have been drilling, and play wrestling, in certain spots the left arm plays a roll i had to teach myself how to post on it and be able to come up and i have trouble moving somebody's arm away. but i am keeping my hopes up and a positive attitude(although hard at time). i plan to recover fully by the end of the year and make my run for the title
