You will feel the difference right after surgery. My hands was numb and feeling came back that day. But i was in pain in my shoulders . Pain meds didnt help for three days they wanted me on pain pills so i could go home. Couldnt swallow them so they gave me liquid morphen. Better then took it a day went home with pills and quit them the second day. Weaned my self to tramadol twice a day. I was terrified to. Glad its done now.

Started having pain  with my shoulder and and lower neck. Now that my 5/6 are fused together the upper and lower vertabrae are getting over used so now starting to bulge. Cant win.

My surgery is scheduled in a week and a half. I too am totally scared to step into a definite change of life. I am having a full neck fusion. C2-t2. Hoping that this is an answer. My neck is becoming deformed. Operation is my only option. I plan to follow doctors orders exactly so I can get the best results. I hope that your surgery goes well.

I know what your going threw,I'm 52 and have degenerated disc disease. I went through years of pain. I had discs4567 fused about month and a half ago ,I'm still wearing my hard neck brace. . To tell you the truth,I'm not a happy camper.I
I'm so diappointed about my surgeon doctor,he made me go through months of wrenching painful therapy. The more therapy they made me do, the worse I got.they would not listen to me ,I was in crying pain e very day.my left arm was so dead I couldn't feel it. Went in for my six week check up,and the doctors were so disappointed in me ,cause some of my fusion isn't healing right, I made the mistake of taking off my neck brace, before I saw my doctor, they said I only had to wear it for six weeks, so six week was up and I through my neck brace in the garbage and thought I would be ok, wrong. I HD my surgery on November 20th, and now it's the middle of January, I'm still wearing the NE k brace until I go back for another check up..I have limited mobility in my neck and the sad thing is,my right arm is so numb and I can't feel my fingers, I can't even turn my head to the left ,I'm having lots of pain in my upper neck, I don't sleep well cause as soon as I lie down, my right arm goes complete dead. I physically, mentally and emotionally draind.I have so much metal in my neck now that the cold weather affects it badly. I can't drive yet, your do normal everyday routines.every day that goes by I tell my self why did I have the surgery. My doctors did not counsel me before the surgery on what to expect after the surgery. The only thing they told me w before I left the hospital, was don't drive, stay out of cars, and don't lift anything over five pounds. I'm at my wits end. My advise is make sure you have a good support system when you arrive home ,your going to need extra help with alot of things. I wish the best of everything and hope all goes we'll. I will keep you posted on my adventure of healing.

Hello, I feel for you as i can relate to a lot of what you're saying. I had my anterior cervical discectomy with fusion C4-C7 in late October 2015. although the surgery has helped with some of my arm pain, my hands are giving me trouble still & my legs are better, and I don't have much of a problem with balance. My problems now are complications due to the surgery. I have a paralyzed right vocal cord, & still lots of bruising & swelling. i wake up with lots of mucous and have to spit and spit, and blow my nose. When I drink anything if I take more than just a sip I feel like I am drowning because it goes up my nose. I use heating pad & ice packs, as well as pain meds., but nothing completely takes my pain away. My sore throat is so bad, it feels like strep throat, I'm constantly choking, and having breathing difficulties. In my case, wearing my brace makes me a little more comfortable, I am weaning myself off of it due to the doctor's orders, but I'm really not sure I'm ready for that. i have to cut my pain pills up into 8 pieces and swallow them with applesauce, one piece at a time. I did see an ENT specialist, and she said with time this should all heal, but if not there is a surgery they can do to correct it. Right now I'm wishing I never had this surgery done. I am 4'8" tall and weighed 105 before the surgery and now I weigh 89lbs. I hope you get to feeling better soon. Thank you for listening to me.
