The most common diseases of nervous system are infectious diseases. It could be divided into two broad categories. Those are diseases which involve primarily the meninges and those which are confined primarily to the parenchyma. Under heading of meningeal infections are considered general concepts after which three basic categories are discussed. Those are pyogenic meningitis, granulomatous meningitis and lymphocytic meningitis. All those categories of nervous systems diseases represent different types of inflammatory responses. Parenchymal infections include syphilis, parasites, fungi, viruses, and prions. Certain fungi and parasites are also capable of producing an abscess. Encephalitis and cerebritis are terms which imply inflammation of parenchyma in the cerebrum and on occasion are used interchangeably. Cerebritis is just one of nervous system diseases that is used to indicate a stage preliminary to abscess formation. That is very destructive process and implies bacterial infection. Encephalitits as one of nervous system diseases means inflammation of brain tissue secondary to viral infection.
