I started taking birth control pills at the beginning of the month and am supposed to have my period regularly every four weeks. When i got them, the person helping me told me to take five extra ones becuase it was the first month. It has been 28 days and I started my period even though i have not started to take the last week of the pills which is when im supposed to get my period. Was it those five extra pills that made this happen???

If you are on a 28 day cycle of birth control pills - meaning that there are 28 pills in your package - the last 7 pills of the package (usually a different color then the rest depending on brand) are just reminder pills. These pills do not have any horomones in them, and therefore it's not a big deal if you take them or not.
There are some birth control pills which only have 21 pills, because they do not have the 7 reminder pills.
You get your period during the week of the 7 reminder pills, because your body stops recieving the horomones provided in the first 21 pills.
