I have had lower back pain on and off for as long as I can remember. I assumed it was due to constipation and would come and go. Recently I have been noticing it more often. A few days ago my left side under my rib cage started to feel sore. I just had gotten over a bad cold and been coughing a lot. My family said it sounded like a pulled muscle. It has not gone away and now my right side also hurts right under my rib cage. It feels sore when I move and also tender to touch. Any idea what this could be? or could it just be a couple of pulled muscles from coughing?

Any chronic pain in the abdomen needs to be checked out by a doctor.

I doubt that a pulled muscle from coughing would do this or for so long.

Make an appointment and get an examination. Follow their directions.

Good luck.

Check for pericardial effusion if the pain hampers breathing.
