Exactly. People are ignorant and this feeds the stereotype. People need to worry about sociopaths, not schizophrenics. If they were the same thing, they'd have the same freaking label.

I have a similar problem this person keeps coming to my house he is a monster in size like scary looking he is very sick hes in and out of the hospital by force regularly I am worried for my family because if i hit this guy with a bat he will not fall thats how big he is hes about 380 pounds 6'8 and has a history of violence he also does crack and all kinds of other drugs basically i hear a knock on my door i see him he does not say a word and just walks into my house he comes and sits down then does not say a word the whole time ( and that is getting me worried him not saying a word is very scary i do not know what is going on in his head ) then eventually my brother came and he still does not say a word ( he is originally my brothers friend) then he starts to say weird things (which is normal) then he wants to stay inside my house when we are going to a family reunion and my brother gets pissed off and yells at him to get him to answer then he starts going nuts then we finally got him out of the house that same night the police got him for something he did i do not know what but he came here to hide from the police i am assuming the thing that scares me out of this is he is not taking his meds i can tell when he is on them and when he is not and the way he acts when some one does not say a word for an hour any one should be worried who knows if hes going to explode and trust me i do not know any one who can take this guy down he always carries a knife on him so that also has me worried i personally seen about 20 cops having a  very hard time getting him on to a stretcher this proves his power and now he will not leave me alone he always comes here and acts trippy i am worried for my families safety but it does not feel right calling the police on him or anything like that ( every cop in my  city knows him as a dangerous person ) since he was my friend and was not acting like this before until some guys jumped him and he felt like depressed after that and  closely after wards he tried destroying some random person on the street my brother witnessed it the guy ran for his life screaming some one help me thank god that guy got away....... my brother described it as a lion chasing a gazelle now i am worried that when he gets out hes coming right back here who knows what hell do with the mental illness and crack mixed together its not a pretty picture he hasnt brought harm to me or my family yet but i am worried that he will i do not want my mom to get stuck in that lion gazelle situation i have told him before to stop coming here but he ignores what i say and still comes back...... you know what they say the quiet ones are the ones we have to worry about i never understood that until i met him this is not the first time hes come to me acting like this one time i was at home i hear someone running from the side of my house u can hear his foot steps because he is abnormally large i see him i open the door he is breathing heavily sweating it was probably the most scariest moment of my life..... my legs felt weak as soon as i seen him then i immediately made sure he never entered my house worried for my moms safety so i forced him to the front of the house and tried talking to him he did not respond  then all i see is about 15 cop cruisers infront of my house trying to talk to him asking me if he has taken any type of drugs recently i said no i did not know he did crack until recently my question is how do i stop him from coming to my home

I just want to say I am a schzophrenic. I have never been a danger to anyone but myself. I am well medicated and my shrink thinks I am well. As long as I stayed medicated I will be fine. There are a lot of dangerous people who are not mentally ill. Open your mind and see if your neighbor is medicated. We really are not a bad lot with medicine.

I have a 20 yo son with paranoid schizophrenia. My neighbor and family became more paranoid than my son. They actually instigated hi
To contact the daughter since he knew all if this was going on. They freaked , filed a restraining order and he is actual mild and no danger to anyone. The public should be educated and now the neighbors are more paranoid than my son. Most people are impressed on how social he us.

Yeah, I'm a "normal" guy... no delusions, voices, problems, etc... I pay my taxes and have kids. While I feel for those of you with an "impairment" let me get something straight, and I think I speak for all the others in situations similar to mine; I will !$!$ing shoot you should you feel the need put my children's, family's, or loved ones' welfare in jeopardy. Meds or no meds, impediment or none... The fact that you can say, well what happens off my meds is excusable because "I have a condition"; go to hell. I'll help you pack.
If your normal, you know, leading a productive life and acting like the rest of us non-gifted folk; kudos! To the rest of you intimidating, misunderstood a-holes... there is a reason we have a second amendment; you're part of it...

Everyone on here seems to have a lot of sympathy for your neighbour, but I have far more sympathy with you!

I have a paranoid schizophrenic neighbour myself who has made my life absolute hell for the last 3 years. I have had her come to my door with a knife in her hand, damage my property, smear excrement all over my bin and constantly ring the police to make riddiculous false accusations against me.

The police and the housing association aren't at all interested in doing anything about the situation and I'm expected just to put up with it because she is mentally ill. I think more should be done to protect people like us. Why should I have to live with this constant abuse and stress?

What if we were afraid of people with Dabetes or Thyroid disorders because we knew they were different? The stupid fear that people continually have over schizophrenia will never be resolved because of ignorance and the media. Most of what media presents is sensationalism and trying to have a good story. Why can't our society recognize that people with serious mental disorders deserve the same care as any other disease. I am frustrated because ignorant people breed fear and more ignorant. Does someone honestly want to take numerous meds and be continuously judged and feared!??

Want to know why this is happening? Because the fear and ignorance of those with a mental illness or maybe this neighbor has a totally un diagnosed illness. . Maybe your out of control neighbor is doing drugs. Maybe her family has abandoned her because they have no where to put her or the means to help her. Put yourself in someonee else's shoes sometime. Would you just not help your loved one? Our society does not make it easy to help these people. I'm tired of stupid, fearful ignorant people.

Years ago, I lived next door to a very dangerous psychotic woman who tried to kill me, set herself on fire, starved her children, I believe poisoned her father (he died) and I believe murdered her husband (the coroner deemed his shot gun wounds as suicide).

After she tried to kill me, I produced a documentary called 'Next Door To Madness." I went on several talk shows to inform the public about the risk to our safety that many of these people pose.

I now live next door to a man, schisophrenic, who has accosted me in the past and threateded to kill my neighbor who had thrown a cigarette absentmindedly and it landed next to his front door. He took a hammer and threatened him with it.

I personally would take all precautions against them, a fence, NEVER ENGAGE THEM IN CONVERSATION, if they come to your door DO NOT ANSWER THE DOOR, If at all possible MOVE....they have more rights than you do. Your safety and the safety of you loved ones is more important than the inconvenience, financial loss...GET OUT!

Listen to your inner voice when dealing with them.

I hope this has helped.

You are absolutely right!!! If you know someone that suffers from paranoid Schizophrenia especially a family member....you need to get them help ASAP. Do not feel sorry for them and just walk away and pretend it will go away. My sister is a paranoid Schizophrenic she started out diagnosed with bipolar and then escalated to schizophrenia. She refused to take medication and so her mental illness just worsened. Last year October 2011 she stabbed her husband to death and then stabbed herself but survived she is now behind bars and is claiming self defense. They are very clever...her husband had a restraining order on her and she had one on him. They had 4 kids together and now these kids are without a mom and dad. We never thought it would go this far but we should have known better a few weeks before she killed her husband she killed the family doggy she stabbed it to death just because the court ordered her to leave there house and was upset at the kids and her husband. Well this is a very long story bottom line if you are living with someone that dealing with paranoid schizophrenia be very careful and if you have no choice and must live with them treat them with a whole lot of LOVE and compassion do not piss them off. Get help but do it in a very loving manner other wise they will retaliate. If your mental illness makes you feel guilty, review the definition of "Illness" and try to treat yourself with the same respect and concern you would show to a cancer patient or a person with pneumonia or diabetes etc.

I'm a schizophrenic ... was paranoid, now residual. Meaning no illogical thoughts and I don't need medication. Anyway, if your neighbor makes threatening comments or actions toward you or your family then yes take precautions. People are dangerous in general regardless of mental illnesses. A medical diagnosis such as schizophrenia does not make someone automatically "dangerous" (violent). It is rather stupid to jump to conclusions like that. Even most sociopaths are not violent, in fact as many as 1 out of every 10 people you know is a sociopath.

Even when I was really bad I was not the least bit violent. Although I said and did some weird things... I'm just not a violent person nor will I ever be. Am I dangerous? Yes. Just as dangerous as you and everyone else on this planet who isn't physically disabled. Food for thought.

Oh and to NeighborOfASchiz. Feel free to exercise your second amendment right all you want, that's not being debated. If someone was to break into my house regardless of who they were or what mental issue they had, they would get shot. End of story. However, for you to rant on and on with hate filled and reactionary BS just shows that you are mentally weak and an imbecile... No one wants to hurt your family and no one gives a sh*t about your family. Relax.

People with mental issues who are also violent are far more likely to hurt members of their own family then anyone else. So having a neighbor who is schizophrenic really isn't that much of a concern. There of course are exceptions to every rule though.. However, worry and hysteria over potential problems that may arise has a definition.. It's called: ignorance.

Take care! ;)
