My doctor suspects that I have polymyositis, and has now told me to obtain a muscle biopsy. I strongly dislike the thought of this and would love for some other way to confirm or deny the polymyositis diagnosis - a blood test perhaps? Can anyone tell me if the muscle biopsy is avoidable?

I am afraid not - polymyositis is mainly daignosed by way of muscle biopsy and it is an essential diagnostic tool. You should not be too worried though. It will be over soon enough and then you will be able to get the treatment that you need, whatever it is that you have. Best of luck!
