I admit that I am very scared these days due to the fact that my doctor mentioned possibility of me having skin cancer – melanoma. And he also said that excisional biopsy might be the best diagnostic procedure for my case. Is that biopsy really needed when there is a suspicion of melanoma?

Well, we are talking about cancer here and in that case, whatever procedure you have to endure, just endure it. When it comes to excisional biopsy, it is nothing that dangerous, and sometimes even effective, since it involves surgically removing the tumor tissue, the entire mass. That mass is then examined under the microscope and the wound edges are sewn together. This is a preferred method when the mole is small.
