My friend has been diagnosed with polymyositis. He was complaining on some muscle weakness and some tests have been done. However, lately doctors think that his thyroid gland is not functioning properly. I wonder if it is possible to misdiagnose these two conditions or maybe they are associated one with another.

Hi. I have read about some cases on the internet. There is a possibility of appearing polymyositis in people with papillary thyroid cancer. However, well differentiated thyroid cancers rarely go with paraneoplastic syndromes. If this happens, a patient can experience some muscle weakness. This can really look like polymyositis. It is not wonder that your friend was misdiagnosed. I hope this will help. Thorough tests must be made. Good luck!
