I got done on friday and today is sunday 3 days later. I have to say when i got the procedure done the doctor put freezing on the left side first then the right. the left side went ok but when they started on the right i almost past out from the pain, he didnt freeze it properly, HOLY #$^#%$& needless to say they put more freezing and it got better.
After the procedure i went home and layed down but i do smoke but not in the house and every time i went for a smoke it took me a good 1 minute to straighten out before i could walk.
The second day got a little bit better, I do notice that if im standing for a few minutes it feels a little better then when i just get up,
today is the third day and still feels raw, when i lay down feels good but when i get up it still hurts, feels like i have been sacked by the hole $%%$@* football team. But i have been putting ice on, laying down, and getting my wife to do everything (cool bonus). Is it safe to say that it takes about a week before i'm up and mostly back to normal?
I have to say i would not do that agian, if you are thinking of getting a this procedure done be prepared for some pain, I know some guys are in less pain than others but if you are prepaired for the worst then it's not so bad good for you!

I am 35 years old and the father of 4. Apparently i got the royal treatment when i got mine done. I got mine done on Jan 6th 2009 at a huge urology office here in Nashville. I went in i got hooked up to an IV then they rolled me back into the surgery center. Since i shave on a regular basis they did not have to shave me. they layed me down with legs up on stirrups. Then the DR came in and put some drowsy meds into my IV and i was in the twilight zone. I did not feel the local anesthetic at all. I woke up and was in the recovery room. Both of my tubes got taken out of my left teste. I only had one incision. Today 5 days later my left testicle is 2 times the left. But i feel way better today. i will keep an eye on it and hope it goes down soon.

I just got my vasectomy done a few hours ago. I appreciate that for many posters here it was a very unpleasant procedure, and I feel for them, but for me it was a breeze.
The procedure itself took about 15 minutes, 20 at the outside. From the time I walked into the surgery to the time I walked out was 30 minutes. The only pain or discomfort I felt was a moderate stinging when the needle for the first local went in (he did one on each side). This stinging lasted for about two seconds and made me wince, nothing more. This was followed by a weird but not really unpleasant sensation as the anaesthetic went in. After that - nothing.
The doctor warned me to expect a sting as the second needle went in, but I felt nothing at all. The first anaesthetic must have worked across to the other side as well.
Other than the two seconds of stinging, I felt no pain or discomfort at all. I was genuinely surprised when he announced it was finished. I chatted happily with the doctor and assistant throughout. The whole thing was no worse than giving blood for a donation or test (probably easier in fact than either of those). For me, stubbing your toe is worse - I mean that literally.
It is now about 3 hours since the surgery finished and the anaesthetic should have well and truly worn off (the doctor said half an hour to an hour). I have a dull ache, similar to being hit moderately in the groin. No thoughts of pain killers or peas yet. I expect more discomfort as the healing process goes on, but so far so good. I have been feeling so good, I've spent the whole time since the surgery doing household chores (probably not a good idea, I know).
I know some people have really bad experiences, but so far for me it has been way easier than something like a trip to the dentist. To put it in context, I am really a bit of a wimp when it comes to pain.
According to my doctor, my experience is typical of his patients. He said most guys suffer a lot more from the fear and expectation. His most difficult patients have been a couple of really big tough guys (one covered in tattoos and body piercings) who got themselves really worked up about it. The calm ones are fine and, in my doctor's experience, serious post-surgery complications are very rare.
For those planning on having the job done - stay calm and best wishes!

An update to my post. It is now Sunday night at 8.30. Had the procedure Friday morning at 9.30.
I mentioned in the earlier one how I had really no pain or discomfort during the procedure or after. Still none!
Friday afternoon and night the most I had was a dull ache and occasional sharp twinge. Saturday morning I had some bruising and discolouration (maybe due to cuddling with my partner and becoming aroused, so increasing blood flow through the area). Saturday I ended up tired by the afternoon, but otherwise did normal, quiet family stuff. By the afternoon even the dull ache and twinges had gone.
Saturday night I got amorous with my partner and aroused for a long while. Common sense prevailed and I didn't use my penis, but felt I could have.
Today, Sunday, I have not noticed any pain or discomfort. There is still some visible bruising, that's all. I did have some mild sharp-feeling pain, but realised this was just the edge of the plastic band-aid against my penis. Changed to a fabric one and all is good.
Have to say, this all seems too good to be true!
Best wishes all.

30-Jan-2009 by a Chicago area urologist, recommended by a friend.
Despite taking 2 tabs of Valium beforehand, I was a nervous wreck. Wife asked the nurse if she could get me a tranquilizer. Nurse scoffed.
Surgical nurse teased me about "shaving too much" as she was taping down my penis -as if she has seen my "before" photo. I like to keep things tidy regardless of if I'm going to have my scrotum opened.
Surgical nurse called in another nurse to help her prep. Other nurse stood around holding a jar of Betadine, doing little else. I believe quite firmly that she was called in to see a young buck supine on the table rather than the routine 80-something prostate patient.
Doc came in and got started. The initial lidocaine injection was like an electric shock. Nurse told me to "relax, breathe through it". Quite easy for her to say standing up there.
The rest of the injections were not bad, something like what you'd feel with dental novacaine injections - entirely unpleasant, but not awful.
Initially the right side was not numb enough and the electrocautery scalpel was giving me jolts of searing pain. He stopped and put in a little more lidocaine.
The whole thing is awful. Even though you can not feel it, you know what's happening, the electrocautery scalpel is buzzing and crackling, and there are puffs of vaporized was deference lofting up from time to time to enhance the experience. There's nothing you can do here but close your eyes and think of England, as it were. This is where a higher dose of Valium - or something - would have helped TREMENDOUSLY. If I can not be knocked out, I want to be stoned, please.
At the end, the nurse removed the drapes on got me cleaned up - pausing to warn me that "this is probably the worst part" when removing the tape from my penis. Nonsense.
What you will hear from the Dr. Nurses, pamphlets, etc. is that it is "no big deal" and the recovery involves "minor discomfort".
These are lies.
Saturday and Sunday were fine with copious amounts of bed rest and Tylenol.
Monday was terrible - after returning to work, the "minor discomfort" set in. It's like having a case of blue balls, only amplified several times. It is a grinding, throbbing ache. Not acute sharp pain, but ache - and I felt it in the inguinal canals, not the testes or vas like one would assume. I had to take the prescribed Vicodin to get me through the day. Fortunately for me I have an office job.
I confided in a few friends (who had the procedure) about this and they all concurred that what I was feeling was par for the course. Not a scientific survey, I know, but it makes 4 out of 4 men in my personal experience who had a "rare" side effect.
On Thursday the "minor discomfort" subsided and resolved into tenderness - more of an inflammation sensation, and mostly in the right testicle.
At 2-weeks post, I had a followup and took the Dr. to task on the "minor discomfort". He admitted that it was a euphemism and that all men recover differently. I asked him rhetorically if the establishment is doing this on purpose to avoid scaring off men (and revenue).
18 days post at the time of this writing, I'm still tender on the right side - it flared up yesterday afternoon I needed an ice pack.
All that said, I do not regret having this done (provided it proves effective at next followup). I anticipate it will make sex less worrisome and save hundreds of dollars a year in birth control.
My regret is being hoodwinked about the recovery process which is more painful than is let on. Further to this, the "no big deal" nonsense is telegraphed to spouses and significant others, who in turn become less sympathetic to the recovery.
Then men suffer from a case of machismo particularly in the US where it is not safe to admit one is in pain - this adds to the deception. I wonder if there is any data at all in pain management and followup.
I also regret not being more aggressive with the nurse. At the time, she had my balls in her grasp, so it seemed a better idea to just shut up.
I will actively advise men in the future - not against it, but to take a realistic attitude.

Ok, first off, some advice...
if you can, SLIM DOWN before getting your vasectomy. I'm 230lbs/6Ft, so not hugely overweight, but the doctor spent literally half an hour groping my balls trying to bring the cords up.
I got it done in Ica, Peru, and it was pretty straightforward. I got the needle, but no scalpel, and snipped & cauterized. Yea the needle stung quite a bit, but it was over fast, no biggy. I was actually surprised, you can tell the needle gets duller with use, the second injection hurt more than the first!
After that, in went the pointy hemostats, and out came the vas. I was laying flat so I didn't get to watch, but now that I'm loafing around in bed, I checked out a few videos, all that tugging down there makes sense now.
The electrocautery was no problem at all, just a smell of burning hair and an audible sizzle. The key with those things is to make sure you've got the grounding plate attached to your body properly, they put it under my calf, and I sweated a bit (it's hot here, no AC), so really good electrical contact there, no electrocution.
A couple of stitches (the anesthetic was wearing off due to all the groping, so it was a bit painful), some gauze and tape, and I was off to catch a cab home. 18 hours later, I've got a vague burning sensation that MIGHT just be the surgical tape pulling on some hairs (they didn't ask me to shave...whatever...) but I'm not feeling adventurous enough to go prodding around down there just yet...I'm on some analgesics and antibiotics for a few days, checkup on monday, hopefully get started on my 20 by friday :-D
