I was using prednisone for a food allergy, and worked out every day (not because I believed it would help me to gain muscle faster). Regardless of the medication, I workout everyday. All I found, is a significantly increased appetite. Believe it or not, after getting off the medication I found I was gaining muscle mass faster without the medication. In other words, don't take prednisone to build muscle, it does not help.

Trust me you don't want to play around with this drug...I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, Giant Cell Arteritis, Fibromyalgia, Myositis, Temporal Mandibular Joint Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Anklyosing Spondylitis and Sciatica...I was 17 when they put me prednisone and im almost 23 now and it has completely ripped my body to hell and back. I gained 70 lbs, have severe cushing's syndrome, new stretch marks daily, puffy face and a lot of anger issues. Not to mention when I try to go off them the withdrawals are worse then my opiate, benzos, neuropathic painkillers and muscle relaxers combined. It literally feels as though a hole is being drilled from the inside out of your bones and then having acid filled into them.

Your adrenal glands could shrink...your testes could not. It's fun when uninformed people speak up, isn't it?

Okay, I'm scared as hell. I'm a father, aged 29, and was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I am having a bad flare up. Have been making about 20 bowel movements a day, always bloody. My doctor just prescribed me prednisone 10mg yesterday. I took my first 40mg dose this morning. I have always been into weight lifting and never have taken steroids but figured I could use this to my advantage cause it's prescribed. Then I read this blog and realize this drug is not anabolic, so it's just going to make me lose muscle. In the last week and a half my life has been flipped upside down out of nowhere. I find out I have to live with Ulcerative Colitis the rest of my life, have to take all sorts of drugs, read up about how bad UC is to live with, been having bad bad thoughts on how it would be easier to just die. Can someone please tell me if this is going to get easier? I see a lot of posts from people with Ulcerative Colitis. How long does a flare up typically last and how long does it go into remission? Any replies would be helpful. Thanks.

I'm a 20 year old male and I had a severe case of poison ivy so the doctor gave me that. I was working at a welding shop doing heavy lifting and I ended up putting on 6 lbs in a week.

I took prednisone for shingles so I believe it is anti-inflamatory and should not be used to build muscle.

Prednisone and Medrol are Cortisol Steroids- not Anabolic steroids. They will aid with relief from Inflammation from some Injuries, from Surgery or certain Illnesses... Additionally, it will frequently make you gain Fat and retain Water.
Fatty gains will be in your Abdomen and Face and Neck, as well as sometimes on the back of your lower C-Spine.
Cortisol Steroids will Not build Muscle- in fact, it is prone to muscle and bone Wasting. It also can make you as Crazy and Mean or Depressed as PMS and unreasonably Hungry for junk food.

If you are concerned with needing more Hormones to make you feel Younger and Stronger, I would recommend Testosterone Cyponate or Testosterone Depot. Both are Legally available with a Prescription...
Your Doctor will do blood work to see how low your natural Testosterone is-- and guessing by the fact that you mentioned a history of illness, yourown Test might be taxed and lowered anyhow.
Some regular symptoms of Low Test are marked Lethargy or Sleepiness or even Insomnia, Depression, Fat-Gain despite Dieting, Weakness, low Sex-Drive and Erectile Dysfunction-- in any sort of degree.

Otherwise, look into Supplements such as 'ZMA' which is a specific blend of Zinc and Magnesium that will help support natural production of Test as you are sleeping. L-Glutamine will support your Immune System and also potentially help to produce Growth Hormone in your body, too. L-Arginine will also increase the chances of new Growth Hormone as well.

There is No More danger from Anabolic Steroids any more than from Any Other prescription drug-- Even Tylenol and Vitamin C can be Lethal if misused-- generally speaking.
Overuse and Unclean Habits will lead to illness or problems, but if you are Smart and Think about all that you do-- you should be fine. Otherwise, stick to a good Food plan, good Supplements, a Smart Workout, and enough Rest...

Good Luck!

Abstract

Long-term glucocorticoid therapy in men is associated with loss of bone and muscle mass as well as a decrease in serum testosterone. We tested the effect of two androgens, testosterone and its minimally aromatizable analog nandrolone, on muscle mass (dual x-ray absorptiometry), muscle strength (knee flexion and extension by isokinetic dynamometry), bone mineral density (BMD), and quality of life (Qualeffo-41 questionnaire) in 51 men on a mean daily prednisone dose of 12.6 +/- 2.2 mg. Men were randomized, double blind, to testosterone (200 mg mixed esters), nandrolone decanoate (200 mg), or placebo given every fortnight by im injection for 12 months. At 12 months, both androgens increased muscle mass (mean change from baseline +3.5%, +5.8%, and -0.9% in testosterone, nandrolone, and placebo groups, respectively, P < 0.0001) and muscle strength (P < 0.05). Lumbar spine BMD increased significantly only in men treated with testosterone (4.7 +/- 1.1%, P < 0.01). There was no significant change in hip or total body BMD. Testosterone, but not nandrolone or placebo, improved overall quality of life (P < 0.001). These results suggest that androgen therapy may have a role in ameliorating adverse effects of glucocorticoid therapy such as muscle and bone loss and aromatization is necessary for androgen action on bone but not on muscle.

I was put on 40mg prednisone to combat a severe asthma attack (even tho I dont have asthma). My doc told me to make sure to work out since I could loss muscle mass and gain weight quickly since im on a higher dose. Prednisone WILL NOT help build muscle mass since its not a anabolic steroid. I will repost after my week treatment once I experience my full range of side effects.

Hi,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have an autoimmune disease that got out of hand last year.  Hospital had me on 120mg of Prednisone per day.  It has been a year and I am down to 5mg per day.  Prednisone is no joke so please do not look to it as a solution to building body mass.  I went from being an athletic 175lb to now a flabby 255lbs!!!!  ALL FAT AND HAIR (in places all women hate-like my face!).  My face looks swollen, I no longer have a neck and my waist is bigger than my hips!  I am the ultimate sex symbol joke!  I am embarrassed to go outside more so for my husband wo still looks great.  I also feel like people look at us and wonder why HE is with ME.  It's terrible!  My only comfort is in knowing I am alive and it's the stupid Prednisone that helped so much.

The weird thing is that, I don't even know when i gained it all.  I though I was eating the same.  Perhaps it was lack of mobility as I was bedridden 3 months.  Anyway, now that i am down to 5mg I need to pull myself out of my Prednisone induced depression and get myself to my old pants.  I have a LONG journey ahead.  Please PLEASE be careful with Prednisone.  Use it only when necessary.

B
