Hey man, I hope you're gotten things worked out by now. But if you haven't, just relax. I'm a 24 year old very fit woman who's just been diagnosed with UC. I don't know when my remission will happen but I know I've already gotten a lot better from my prednisone! Don't worry so much about the side effects. I lost so much weight from the UC that I would love a little extra meat. But that's beside the point, the prednisone causes an increased appetite and THAT causes weight gain. Just watch what you put in your mouth when you eat. In fact if you're that into fitness, look at it this way you can just use this increased appetite to fill you're body with nutrient rich foods. The effects of prednisone are really no different than the average American diet. Eat as much c**p as possible and blame everything but yourself. I have an enormous appetite regularly as an aspiring body builder and all I eat are greens, protein, and organic. And I only gain muscle. So with the prednisone just make healthy choices when you feel the need to eat. Legitimately healthy choices. Also stop going to fear mongering sites that talk about bone snapping. Weight lifting makes bones and muscle strong it will counteract bone and muscle weakening medication. And those medications only yield those side effects with years and years of use. Just take it a day at a time.

lifting weight would strengthen your bones; so stopping because youre taking corticosteroids would just make your bones weaker.

Except I'm on Prednisone and have been weight lifting most of my life, and I have osteoporosis at age 26 because of the Prednisone as well as other health issues related to it. It's not fear mongering, it's facts. Prednisone also makes you retain water weight, and DOES make you gain weight (not just because of the increased appetite). You've only just started it so you wouldn't know yet.... Just wait. You're losing weight because of your UC, which makes you not absorb nutrients as well, not because of the Prednisone.

I have UC and it will calm down. Treat the stress not the symptoms even if it means antidepressants.

I have crohn’s disease and I can say first hand stay away from prednisone at all costs. I have been on and off pred since 1996 and on 40mg a day day 2006-2016 and 2016-present 20mg a day. I have had cataracts in both eyes and had them removed, I have the bones of a 80 year old woman and had a total left left and femur to 3in above my knee replaced, I have loads of swelling and water retention, and high blood pressure, also lost all my teeth from prednisone. My best advice is stay away at all costs and only use for the shortest time possible as it's taken over the job of my adrenaline gland and I can get get totally off pred now.. Also they have found if you take any amount 100mg or less for 2 weeks or less you don't need to taper you can stop suddenly with no problems.

I just said a prayer for you. Spend quiet time with God and release all your fears to Him. He cares for you and he will guide you into the truth that will make you whole and healed. Don't walk in fear, just pray and believe. By His stripes you are already healed. Just begin to praise Him and claim your healing everyday. Repeat healing scripture daily and let it sink down into your heart. You are not alone...be strong.

Prednisone is not an anabolic steroid usually associated with weight lifters and bodybuilders. In fact they would run from the drug as fast as possible, it is a catabolic steroid, not a muscle building steroid. It should only be taken if you have a medical condition that can't be improved with anything else. I have lifted weights for 40 years, I have used anabolic steroids multiple times over those years, they build muscle faster, but have so many side effects, you have to balance the rewards vs the side effects. Again, prednisone is not ever used for muscle gain, it is the opposite, it makes gaining muscle very hard if not impossible especially if taken for longer than a couple of weeks.

Change your diet. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables daily. Avoid all junk food, fast food, packaged food. Avoid or keep to a very minimum spicy foods, complex carbs like bread and pasta, alcohol. It is very important to exercise. Walking 45-60 minuets a day. Weights for three days a week to keep bones healthy and body strong. Light workouts, though. Nothing very heavy (in an attempt to gain mass) or very long in duration. It is a lifestyle change for the remainder of your life, but it is necessary. It is a healthy lifestyle, obviously, which offers multiple benefits. This reduced my flareups from every few months to having none in nearly 20 months thus far. Good luck. It can be done. Go do it!

Placebo effect... I had the same thing going for a week where Infelt like it was making me stronger because I thought it was anabolic.

I simply have to reply to this rude, and completely uneducated post.

Prednisone or prednisolone are medications in the glucocorticoid class.

It doesn’t help one bit if catabolic steroids provide more energy if that energy isn’t used for building muscle.

Glucocorticoids are a safe and sure way to proteolysis, where hydrolysis of proteins make the protein unuseful for muscle building, regardless of available carbohydrate energy.

With glucocorticoids you will have inefficient protein synthesis and protein degradation regardless of available energy.

In fact, having excess energy around if that energy isn’t used for musclebuilding workouts (made impossible from atrophy inducing prednisone) you’ll gain nothing but a requirement for longer workouts just to burn them off before fat storage.

If your doctor prescribed glucocorticoids, take them. If you don’t medically need them, stay far away. They will do nothing for building muscle, and instead provide a rich baggage of side effects:

- diabetes
- depression
- muscle atrophy
- thinning skin
- vision problems
- fluid retention
- rapid weight gain
- bone weakness
- hypertension
- immune suppression
- insomnia
- impotence
- baldness
- seizures

This is the best advice so far! I am taking it for over 3 months for muscle gain and it works wonder. But: no carbs, no sugar, no sodas, no bread and seeds etc... Only meat based products and it s working. Amazing. The overall mood is phenomenal and the energy of lifting is to the rooftop.

You get used to it and deal with it. You will have periods of remission, during which you should lift weights to build as much bone and muscle strength as you can in preparation for the next flare up that will cause those gains to wither. If you don't lift while in remission you will just further erode your muscle and bone mass with every flare up that you have to take corticosteroids to control. I've had UC since I was 14 and I'm 56 now. My doctor once told me not to lift weights while on prednisone because it causes water retention in every cell in the body, including muscle cells, which makes the muscle cells tight and unable to function at peak performance, and prednisone slows healing so the effects we normally seek from weight-lifting don't really happen. The Dr. recommended instead aerobic activity like walking to ensure plenty of oxygen in the blood and to keep the circulatory system functioning. The medicine that has helped me the most long-term (other than prednisone, which is not a good long-term solution because of the myriad terrible side effects and damage long term use causes) is Lialda, which is one of the Mesalamine (aka 5-ASA) drugs. Mesalamine works topically so doesn't really get into the bloodstream and once you find the formulation that works you will have to shop around for the lowest cost version. Regarding prednisone, you might want to try cortisone enemas, which put the steriod right where it needs to be and reduces the system effects that you have from prednisone, but when you have a bad flare that affects the entire colon you will systemic cortisone (i.e., prednisone).

I got poison ivy real bad, and my doctor put me on a three week cycle of prednisone. I am into lifting weights big time, and was wondering will the prednisone have a significant effect on a muscle loss?
