Hi, I am 45 years old and suffering of frequent heartburn. Most doctors prescribed me Prilosec as highly effective drug but it does not help me all the time especially I have to withdrawn with medication after 14 days. Is there any alternative, more effective drug? What about other over-the-counter drugs such as Tagamet and Zantac.

Tagamet (Cimetidine) and Zantac (ranitidine) are drugs that belong to the same class of drugs called acid suppressing agents also known as histamine receptor antagonists. On the contrary, omeperazole (Prilosec) belongs to class of proton pump inhibitors. Therefore, the only alternative for you is lansoprazole (Prevacid), but consults with your doctor prior using this drug as it belong to the same class of drugs.
