my son has been on and off drugs for several years now, he just went through a period of around a year of being clean. He recently took off for about 2 weeks after a period of 2 or 3 weeks of showing signs of drug use again. He has now returned and admits that he has been on a "runner" and using meth again. He has been back home for 3 days now and has not went anyplace. He sleeps almost all the time and when he is awake he is eating, most of his eating is sweets like icecream. He is also wanting to drink lots of juices with lots of vitamins, he says this will help him. He complains that he hurts all over, but that is getting some better but still really hurts in the kidney area. Is this something that will continue for a long period? Could it be something besides meth causing this and is there anyway to help him through it?

Meth causes hyper acidity and is rich in uric acid. When on Meth, loss of appetite and sleep is common. It weakens the immune system as well. Meth is a psychostimulant and is secreted through urine, which damages the kidneys.

Most users are aware of this and compensate by drinking vitamins and eating healthy when they can. The reason he sleeps a lot is because his body is trying to make up for the days when he has not rested. The kidney are responsible for urine. His kidney are hurting bad just means he's taken a big amount. The kidney are having a hard time filtering the waste and uric acid.

Increased appetite, eating mostly sweets and drinking caffeine are normal. Since Meth no longer stimulates his body, he consumes other stimulants. The muscle pain or 'hurts all over' as he describes it are the Meth as well. It tightens the muscles and increases alertness/attentiveness. The body is unable to relax fully. Even when you lying down, the body remains stiff.

Exaggerated fidgeting, tightening of jaw muscles and incessant desire to fiddle with objects on their surroundings are also caused by Meth and may also be the cause of his body pains.

How long it will last varies. All the things he's been experiencing is due to the Meth. Give him lots of fluids to help flush away the drug and to ease the kidney a little.

Hoped this helps!
