Provera works both ways. I have PCOS so my cycles are irregular. When I go 3 mo the without a cycle my OBGYN prescribe me provera to make it come on. I am now experiencing bleeding for now almost 3 mo the straight being on my cycle. I was prescribed Provera to stop the bleeding which has worked but after I finish my dose the bleeding starts back. I have ever been back to taking provera but now it's not stopping the bleeding. Scheduled for and ultrasound next week to see what's going on and the next step.

I am 40 years old. I had a cyst on my right ovary and a couple months ago before I was put on provera, I thought I was hemoraging. I would bleed through a tampon and my clothes before 30 minutes, and was scared to go anywhere. I had gotten my bath one night, and as I was getting out of the tub, I had blood falling out of me like raindrops! I was freaking out because I had never had this happen to me before. I was having severe cramping and was crying. My husband came in from work and asked me why I was not cleaning up the mess. I told him that I couldn't because it wouldn't stop! Well, he realuzed I was telling the truth and rushed me to the ER. They did nothing but monitor my blood pressure for a while, then sent me home. I went to a specialist and got my ovary checked recently and guess what? The cyst had shrunk 2 inches. My lining of my uterus had been over 2 inches thick, it isn't that thick anymore. I asked the doctor if it was possible that the cyst on my ovary had ruptured, and she said that was a good possibility. I have three children that are 20, 17, and 12. I had 3 miscarriages 2 before my 12 year old and one after. I am taking the provera so that I don't bleed, because I never know when i will start or stop my periods and I never know how bad the cramping will be.

Hey, I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd try to help in case someone has the same question. I've had irregular periods for the last year after a miscarriage. I didn't have a period for 4 months, so I was prescribed Provera to start my cycle. Now, I've had a period for 2.5 months straight. My doctor prescribed Provera for me again. She said it can stop and start a period. I hope that helps!

I was always prescribed it to start my period but now I've been bleeding for 10 days and it's horrible. We are also TTC. I may try taking provera to stop it.

i was put on 5 mg provera to try and remove the lining after a D&C and it grew back. I spotted for a few days after starting the provera and then nothing for 14 days and today i have started bleeding heavier and hurting like i have cramps and of course i i am going to beach this weekend. Always when you go somewhere like the beach you start bleeding. Iam 69 years old, doctor just called back and stated he gave me the pills to keep the lining off of my uterus and if it dont work he will do the ablasiion in 6 months.

Hi i know this post was over a year ago but the same thing has happened to me. I had no irregular bleeding with my first child. My bleeding didn't start until my second child was 16 months. I had an ultrasound done and it did show a cycst on my ovary. I didn't have any blood work done yet.I was prescribed provera for 10 days (1 pill per day) and my bleeding has not stopped. Going on day 27 now! How did your doctors appt go? What was the next step your doctor took?
