Hi there,
As Much as I know this is non cancerous growth in the conjunctiva which lays over the white part of your eye. Is just one eye affected by this condition of your both eyes have pterygium. I think that they do not know what is the real cause of this condition but some say that too much exposure to wind and sun might give higher chances to have this condition. I am not sure but I think that no treatment is needed unless this begins to block your vision. In this case your only option would be surgery because nothing else will help you restore your vision.

Best wishes,
Marco
