I am 52 and I was experiencing discomfort in pelvic area. I went to my doctor and after some examination he determined that I have rectocele. I would like if someone could tell me more about it. Is this condition dangerous?

A rectocele occurs when the rectum pushes the back wall of the vagina forward. This causes a prominent bulge into the vagina and risk factors include difficult childbirth and the use of forceps during delivery. However, women who have never had children can also develop rectocele. The symptoms of rectocele are: a sensation of pressure within the pelvis, the feeling that something is falling down or falling out within the pelvis, lower abdominal and back pain. Some of these symptoms are worsened by standing up and eased by lying down. Other symptoms include a bulging mass felt inside the vagina, vaginal bleeding that's not related to the menstrual cycle, painful or impossible vaginal intercourse, constipation problems etc. A rectocele with no obvious symptoms doesn't need medical treatment. However, it is wise to pay attention to diet and other lifestyle factors that contribute to constipation and treatment options include: high fibre diet, fibre supplements, stool softeners etc.
