For the past 11/2 yrs. I've had this problem several times. It only lasts a few days then dissipates. I've had a clear, thin post nasal discharge most of the time and my neck is always stiff and painful to move when it is present. I'm also having pain in my shoulder this time. It may be coincidental, I wouldn't know.

Hi. The symptoms you're describing – clear, thin post-nasal discharge, along with recurrent neck stiffness and pain, and now shoulder pain – could have several potential causes.
-
Allergic Rhinitis: This condition, commonly known as hay fever, can cause a clear, thin post-nasal drip. It often coincides with other symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, or a sore throat. Allergies can sometimes lead to muscle tension and discomfort due to constant sneezing or coughing.
-
Sinusitis: While sinus infections often cause thick, discolored nasal discharge, some people may experience clear drainage. Sinusitis can also cause facial pain, headaches, and sometimes neck discomfort.
-
Cervical Spondylosis: This is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck. It can cause chronic neck pain and stiffness, and in some cases, the pain can radiate to the shoulder.
-
Muscle Strain or Tension: Chronic postural issues, stress, or specific activities might lead to muscle strain in the neck and shoulder area, causing pain and stiffness.
-
Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in one area of the body is felt in another. For example, issues in the cervical spine or certain types of headaches can manifest as shoulder pain.
-
Viral Infections: Certain viral infections can cause both post-nasal drip and musculoskeletal pain, though these are typically accompanied by other symptoms like fever or fatigue.
You might find some relief with over-the-counter pain relievers, nasal saline rinses, or allergy medications, but these should be used in consultation with your doctor, especially if you have any other medical conditions or are taking other medications.
