Hey there,
I'm an avid marathon runner. My husband and I unfortunatly had to have an abortion this week. How soon after can I resume my running? My doctor said they recomend 2 weeks. For me that is impossible- I would love to see if anyone has had any experience with resuming light exercise after abortion.

Thank you

We tell our patients to wait one week if the abortion is 12 weeks or less.

Resuming exercise too soon will cause extra bleeding, heavier blood loss, and cramping.

I am relieved to see this post. I just found out I am pregnant, but have two girls 12 and 9 that are becoming independent beings. I am training for my first marathon this year and think I have really found something that brings me great joy...besides my work as a professor and mom. I have not had this sense of "me" in years. I am also considering a divorce from my husband (not the father of my girls) because we really have nothing in common anymore. I love to run and enjoy fitness and he enjoys TV and snacking late into the night. I can't imagine having a baby with this man today. I think I should pursue an abortion. I am 39 and just starting a my career in academia. I don't think I can handle all this....and giving up running is something I absolutely believe would put me in a deep depression. I am sad, and probably will not be able to run the marathon after months of training, but at least I see from this post that I can resume running sooner than I thought. Thank You!

I think it's best to wait atleast a week. i just had an abortion last thursday. i went for a 5 k run 3 days later and it bought on bleeding. As i did this 3 times in the past week. i defineltly noticed a pattern. Very eager to get back into running, but i think wait atleast 2 weeks. The body goes through a lot and it's not worth the risk of complication or infection. I was very silly to do this but obviously the running is such good therapy...and addictive:)

this relieves me too. I Run 5-6 days a week and weight train 2-3 days a wek and am an avid hiker. I had an abortion 6 days ago. I have been going for 2 one mile walks a day walking at like 3.0 miles per hour. Yesterday the bleeding and cramping stopped completely so i went for a 10 minute hike. later that night the bleeding and light cramping started again. sorry to use another person's post as a platform to ask this question but i am kind of freaked out

I had a medical abortion 2 weeks ago, I do crossfit and weightlifting, and I would love to start training as soon as possible. When can I start exercising after undergoing a medical abortion?
