Hello, folks. My neighbor wasn’t feeling very well. She went to a doctor and she has done a blood test. I have noticed that her sed rate is over 100! I would really like to know what this means. I am not a medical professional. I would really appreciate all your opinions.

Hello. This is quite high sedimentation rate. For males, normal rate is 0-15 mm per hour. For women, this value is 0-20 mm per hour. It is increased with infections or some inflammatory diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. I am afraid that sed rate with three figures means only one thing – cancer. Of course, you mustn’t tell this to your neighbor at once. He should check it again and do more tests. I hope everything will be all right. Bye!

Oh my goodness, that is such WRONG information to give that poor neighbor!!!!  Yes, ESR's (sed rates) DO go up greatly in the presence of cancer, that is NOT the only reason it could be that high!!!!  My husband's has gone that high with a bad inflammatory response to a knee replacement...and it came back DOWN with the removal of the offending hardware!!!!  It would NOT have come back down simply by removing some METAL if it was caused by cancer!!!!!   Other than that, your response was good, and any competent physician would already be doing follow-up to locate the cause!!!
