I also have suffered sever ear aches while sleeping. I had to keep switching sides to allow the pain to decrease in one ear while it built up in the other. Then I was also getting the same ear aches when I wore hearing protection muffs while riding on our mower. I attributed the pain to a reastion with the foam itself. I switched to feather pillows 5 years ago and have not had an ear ache at night since.

I have the same ear pain! It's not an ear infection by any means. When most people turn in their sleep, they wake with no recollection of the event but when I turn (or shift) in my sleep I'm awakened because I can't lift my head off the pillow or even move my head for that matter because if I attempt to do so I find the crushing pain around my upper ear unbareable.

It's as though my entire head weighs like a ton and that weight crushing my ear against my pillow is what's causing it. I wanna say it happens because some of us sleep with our head in the same position for way too long. I wish there were a cure for it cause when it happens and it wakes me I have to carefully lift my head really slowly and that's the most painful period. Do those of you that also suffer from this also find you don't move much while you sleep? I'm also beginning to suffer similar pains elsewhere on my body and again I want to attribute it to sleeping in the same position for too long .... Anyone else???

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who suffers with this pain. My pain at the top of my ear started about 15 years ago. I use to think that my ear was folding when ever I turned on my side as I sleep. This was only happening once or twice a year and the past year or so, it has gotten worse. I pretty much have it everytime I sleep , when I don't, I wake in the morning saying to myself "Thank goodness I never had ear pain through the night." The pain that I get is at the top of the ear it's like I have too much pressure on it. The pain will wake me up and when I move (very slowly) the pain is severe and sometimes unbearable. I never have mentioned it to my doctor, because I just chalked it up to sleeping on the one side for too long and with too much pressure. It's good to know that others suffer from this as well and I'm not alone. One has mentioned that they thought it might have something to due with horimones, I wonder this my self too, as I'm getting up there in age and now the pain is every week, sometimes every night. It was also mentioned of a speacial pillow witht the link to the sight, I will be checking this out, because I spent over $500 trying to find the right pillow and to no advail. Thanks for the info, it all was a big help

Wow, am I ever glad to hear that I'm not the only one! My mom & one sister have this problem, and recently my 6 y/o daughter has started waking at night w/ this pain too!

I've been having trouble w/ my ears for the past several years, since I was pg w/ my last baby, who's now 5. One audiologist I saw last year thinks there's something wrong w/ my middle ear, wanted me to do a bunch of tests but I got a new job & had to cancel them. Haven't done them yet but now feel I ought to.

Mine was occasional when a kid, now in past few years has got so bad it's every night, all night I toss & turn & now am fatigued and exhausted because I sleep so bad.

Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of this problem. I do sleep with a very soft pillow that I use my fist to punch an indent in for my ear to sit in. That helps a lot, but still it seems anything touching them when I sleep makes them hurt nowadays. It's so annoying!!

Yes this is me, too... I have had this problem since I was a kid, but in past few years it's become unbearable to the point I wake up exhausted every morning!

I've had tinnitus starting more regularly too (have had that since I was a kid) and in past 3 years some vertigo/dizzyness that they can't find a cause for. These are becoming more than an occasional annoyance too.

Audiologist I saw last year thought I had something wrong in middle ear, scheduled me for a bunch of tests but I was job hunting & did find a job so had to cancel them all. Never got them done. Need to still.

My ears ache all day now and the problems that started 3 years ago (numb left side of face) has not gone away either. I half suspect they're all related somehow.

Glad to hear that others are affected by this ear problem too! My 6 y/o daughter has been waking occasionally w/ ear pain. I'm afraid she may also have this condition, so am motivated more now than ever to get to the bottom of it.

The deathly overnight earaches started for me 3.5 yrs ago. I just finally went to the first ENT about 5 months ago,and he diagnosed me with TMJ and said to see an oral surgeon. He also said I must be grinding or clenching my teeth at night which I know for a fact I don't. Either way I couldn't be more sure that the earaches from my jaw and the earches overnight are not even possibly related. So frustrated I went to another specialist and he said I have TMJ but don't have to clench or grind to get ear pain. TMJ can cause a lot of problems, even if your jaw isn't perfectly aligned I guess. I had a CT scan which came back normal and am getting a middle ear test tomorrow because I get dizzy, and my equilibrium used to be way off, but has gotten better, so maybe it can tell something else?? If its anything helpful I will post, but otherwise I think it could be jaw related. Which if that's the case, I guess suffering for a long time b/c there isn't much you can do for that but surgery. Still just doesn't seem to make much sense. I get it on my right side too. Good luck to all

Just yesterday I saw a sleep disorders dr. b/c I am having severe fatigue lately as well as all the other weird things going on with me.

I mentioned this problem w/ my ears & he seemed genuinely unaware of this problem.

How can so many people have this problem & yet no doctors have heard of this specifically??

Just nuts.... well at any rate I have to do a sleep study to rule out apnea.

WOW! I am so glad I ran across this posting. I swear I thought I was the only person in the world having this problem. Yet no doctor ever seems to know why, they run test after test and everything always comes back normal. It makes no sense at all and is REALYY fusterating!!!!! I started experincing this about 1 year ago, my sleep is so interrupted by this ear pain and it sucks because I have 2 kids, a full time job and school, who has time for all this? Alot like the rest of you it's so bad I can not seem to life my head off of the pillow. I also have severe nightmares associcated with this ear pain too. Does anyone else seem to have nighmares too? If anyone seems to get a reasonablt answer or anything please let me know, and I will do the same!

Can someone please tell me what use the Fluoride is there? We have tons of the stuff knocking about, it slows down the metabolism, will cause ur thyroid to metabolism to slow and encourage diabetes, putting that in the mix makes no sense at all.

Like others on this site, it's a relief to know I'm not the only one! I have asked several doctors over the years about this same issue and no one has had anything helpful to share. I have had this ear pain when sleeping on my side (both sides are equally as bad) and for years I would sleep with my hand alongside my face with my thumb curled around under my ear. This would raise my ear off the pillow enough to keep me from waking with sharp, intense pain in my ears that would often take up to an hour and a half to subside. When I wasn't sleeping on my back, it got to the point that my arm would hurt from bending my elbow so high while sleeping trying to protect my ear, so I decided to make a small donut shaped pillow (where my ear rests right in the center) a few years ago. (I've had this issue for at least 14 years.) This cushion works like magic! It is small and easy to travel with. Funny thing though, I had to make a second pillow about 2 years ago, as on a trip one time I left my little donut pillow in a hotel room on the bed. I can only imagine what the staff thought about it when they made up the room! Now I am careful to put it in my suitcase when I wake up......even if we are staying more than one night. I had looked on the internet a couple of years ago to see if there was any information on this, but found nothing. Thought I'd check on it again just this week and was pleasantly surprised to find some fellow sufferers. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I too have the same outer cartilage pain but only in my left ear. In order to avoid the pain when I sleep on my left side, I have to sleep with my face on my left hand. My ear fits into the area between my thumb and index finger and this slight elevation off the pillow is enough to prevent any pain. Someone on an earlier thread mentioned circulation - I tend to have pretty poor circulation, especially on my left side so I think you may be onto something.

I am also a sufferer for many years but on and off. It is allergy season and I am noticing the pain every night now both sides. I am going to try some decongestants and see if that helps. I am also 41 and will pay closer attention to my cycle and the pain to see if there is a correlation. I also had tubes as a child. I wonder how many of us did and if there is some relation to that. thanks for all the advice. Good luck to all.

I have had this problem with my ears hurting at night for years. The pain is unbearable at times and is getting worse. I am not glad that other people have this pain but I am glad I may learn from someone. I have discussed this with my Dr. but he just blows it off. Thanks for letting me know it's not only me that has this problem.
