Thank you for posting about this. I am incredibly frustrated with the stabbing pain. I just couldn't stop crying about it this morning, it hurt so badly: the chronic aching, the not having another side to turn on, the searing stabbing when I lift off the pillow, especially that because you're in pain anyway and then, you have to make it worse for yourself just to end it! They are still throbbing in my ear cartilage and middle ear, and it has been hours since my head was on the pillow.
A few years ago, when it got really bad it dawned on me to ask a Naturopathic Doctor (since no MD could find an ear infection, there was nothing "to do"). She gave me a homeopathic medicine that helped. I moved, she is not my doctor anymore, I don't know what it is, and can't get in touch with her from here. If any of you have brought this to your ND, please let me know what the homeopathic might be! I am desperate to get it!
I will definitely try wrapping cotton rope around my head to support the ear and try buying a new pillow, but I know that I will get stuck without those things at some point. Also, I will definitely try and work on my congestion level. In the meantime, please let me know if you may have seen/heard about this homeopathic!
Thanks so much.

The pain in your ear is likely not caused by your ear at all, but rather your sinus. Is your nasal passage stuffy on the same side as your painful ear? In many cases the pain also radiates to that side of the throat as well.

To ease your ear pain at night you will need a sinus cleansing pot (Google SinuCleanse or NetiPot), and a nasal spray with Phenylephrine hydrochloride 1%. (4 Way Fast Acting is a good choice).

The instructions are as follows:

1. Fill the pot half way with saline solution that comes with the pot. Add 6 drops 4 Way spray to the saline, stir to mix.

2. Flush your sinuses as shown in the Sinu-Cleanse video, or for deeper cleaning try the earadicator method.

Hi, I too have this pain in my ears with the burning-up sensation and have lost sleep with it too.
One thing i know did help in the past was a anti depressant drug, maybe Sertraline, not 100%, but NOT for depression.

I was put on 3 different types of AD drugs when i was diagnosed, and still suffer from, with ME/CFS but none of them agreed with me and made me feel worse (body wise) but as they are prescription only, i haven't been able to find anything that worked like that did.
Plus with all the side effects i suffered, i refused to go on any more AD drugs.

I cannot remember now which one it was but i have been on Sertraline, Amitriptyline but can't recall the name of the third.

I also think it could be circulation related as the same one that cured my ears also stopped me from getting pins and needles in my arms when i raised them for a length of time.

I don't know if any of this info is of any use.

Only if it's pressure related of 'inside' the ear and near constant pain.

The pain here is of the outer ear, otherwise known as the pinna and is mainly when pressure is applied, like laying down on a pillow.

The same problem started for be about 2 weeks ago. The only thing that I could find as an association is that we've just bought a new foam mattress. It is the kind that contours around your body and removes the pressure points. I have been using a foam pillow for 6 months now, and, at first, I didn't think it was the cause.

But the thing with the foam mattress is that, with all the contouring and relieve of pressure points, I find that I don't toss and turn to get comfortable the way I used to with a spring mattress. The result is that, because I'm a side-sleeper, I'm laying on one side, and the corresponding ear, for a lot longer time than I used to. It really makes sense, now that I have the benefit of all these posts to look at.

I am going to get a softer pillow and see if that makes a difference. If not, I'll have to come up with some other solution, perhaps a less-conforming mattress.

BTW, with regard to phenylephrine spray, DO NOT use it regularly without advice from a doctor. It can cause terrible rebound congestion and suffers from a form of tachyphylaxis (repetitive doses close together cause progressively less and less response).

I just had to go to an Ear Nose & Throat doctor today for the same thing. He said the only "cure" is to cut into my ear and deaded the nerve. It doesn't sound pleasant and I haven't decided what to do yet but I know the pain is getting to be too much.

Same ear pain as most of you are describing. Like some of you I find myself using my hand to prop my ear off the pillow. About two years ago I moved into a new house, and not long after my middle ear starting itching. It was an intense itch that could only be satisfied with by me putting my pinkie finger in my ear an wiggling it. I also starting having issues with a thin, or wet, ear wax At least I think it was ear wax. Maybe not as I have never had ear wax build up. At one point a doctor prescribed ear drops that had three different types of medication in one. One of the them was an antibiotic and the drops worked for a while, but the pain came back. Know it only occurs at night on the ear I lay on. I too toss from side to side in search of pain management.

I have considered that it may be allergies, as I'm allergic to all kinds of c**p. I also thought it might be fungal related. But the past few days I have been considering that it may be dust mite allergies. My super comfortable $2400 mattress is now 10 years old and I bet it's teaming with dust mites. I can't imagine having to part with it or having to drop that kind of coin again. I read online that you can lay your mattress out in the hot sun for a couple of day and it will kill the dust mights and any mildew. It also logically stated that you should pick a day with low humidity and bring the mattress in over night if you are going to leave it out for a two day sunbath.

I'm going to try the vitamin D and the whole in the pillow. If the whole in the pillow doesn't work at least I can use it for something else. 8==D

If all else fails I guess I'll have to drink myself to sleep every night.

Amazing! I went just last week to the doctor for this problem. He had no idea. Woke up two nights with terrible pain on scalp behind left ear, and couldn't even touch my outer ear. It was not red or swollen. Sitting up, it went away in 10-15 minutes. I dug out my foam cervical pillow, thinking it was referred pain from a cervical disc, maybe pressing on a nerve. It was definitely positional, but think I was lying on the opposite side than affected. I suddenly realized in the past, I had partially awoken fitfully sometimes, pulling my earring out in my sleep, imagining the post was causing an infection or pressing on my neck. I would not remember in the morning, but this must have happened before. Like some of the other posts, I DO have Hashimotos Thyroiditis, diagnosed 20 years ago! I don't have great circulation (feel the cold) and mild Reynod's. Have been waking recently with tingling, numbness in my hand, arm too. Figured I was sleeping on it, pinching a nerve. Have had few issues with mild vertigo off and on last year. Hmm...this is a mystery! Amazing how many posts have similar symptoms. I'm going to buy vitamin D supplements, make apt. with an endocrinologist, check thyroid, parathyroid levels. Also, mid 40's so hormones may be playing a role. I may print some of these posts, bring them with me... see, I'm not totally weird, others have this same problem too! Boy am I glad I found this site! Was concerned maybe an anatomical issue with something pressing on the cranial nerve. Has anyone found that a deep tissue message of the neck, shoulders helpful? Also wonder if others have had esophogeal reflux issues at night? Wonder if that could be a possible cause, referred pain? Curious to follow posts, see what others find out!

Misery may love company but I am just gald to know that I am not crazy. My ear hurts like he-- every morning. It is actually
painful to lift my head off the pillow. One post said it gets worse before it gets better and that is the worst part. Glad to
know I can get some relief from a pillow to take the pressure off. Hope all your ears get relief !!

I'm 29 now and have had this since my teenage years is all I can remember. I never thought to look it up but am so glad that this is more common than I ever thought. I wonder if any of the rest of you have ever noticed if your ear canals feel hotter than usual b/c mine do. They also sometimes ache through the day if I have had the pain during my sleep the night before. I found a tempororay cure to this so I'm happy to share it with the rest of you!

My husband snores so I can't bare to listen to it at night, I bought the cylinder foam ear plugs to combat the noise of his snoring. For some reason, when I wear the ear plugs it stops the aches and pains altogether, its like a miracle. I don't have to angle my head any certain way, I can just go to sleep and not worry about getting any pain. Lately, I haven't been able to wear the ear plugs b/c I have my newborn baby in the room and need to be able to hear him if he wakes up. Needless to say the aches are back, it hurts so bad and I know exactly what the other poster meant when they wrote they don't even want to take their ear off the pillow b/c then the pain becomes so severe before is subsides. BUT I highly recommend to all of you to try ear plugs, if it works for me I don't see why it wouldn't work for the rest of you. It's like it keeps my ear in place, it's weird. The cost about $3 for a pack.

Please give me feedback, I'd like to know if the ear plugs work for the rest of you!

Hi there!

I've had this pain for a while now, the same stabbing pain in the same(right) ear and not being able to lift my head off the pillow.
My GP was useless, but when i went to see a ENT specialist he said i had no ear infection, but the pain might be related to the wisdom teeth. at that time only the bottom one was out, but now the top one came out and the pain is still there and maybe even worse. so i hope that that is the case. I'm not looking forward to having my wisdom tooth out, but if it helps, so be it. i haven't been to see my dentist yet, but when i do, i will let you know if it worked, because lots of this posts were also very helpful.

P.S. putting a hot compress to the ear at night helped me a lot.
