Have you been tested for Celiac's disease? Most doctors don't even know what it is, even now, but it's actually a very common autoimmune disorder affecting an estimated 1 in 133 people. 50% of people with it report no digestive symptoms, and peripheral neuropathy and muscular-skeletal issues are both common symptoms.

They make pillows now for side sleepers that have a small indention in the foam for your ear so there won't be the pressure from the weight of your head. I find that some looser pillows allow me to make an indention.

I have been following this discussion for some time - ditto to all of the above! I eventually figured that my situation had to be pressure in my ear because I had no physical (examined) symptoms. This lead me to look at my sinuses and I realised I have always been sniffly. Use of a neti pot indicated that they were congested. And there was a defining crackle in my ears towards the end of the wash. Bingo! Having cleared out my sinuses, I am now pain free. I am now doing allergy testing to get rid of the sniffles and use the neti pot daily.

What might it be if you get severe ear pain that's so bad you can't touch your ear, hair, scalp ... can't take a shower, can't smile or laugh, sometimes I can't even lift or turn my head! Heat and Ice don't help (OUCH), no pain meds work, not advil, not oxy!

I've had this for like 20 years and it seems to get worse and worse-
I wake up from it, but NEVER EVER EVER sleep on that ear!

Sometimes I get it in the middle of the day...
Sometimes it lasts for a few hours, sometime a few days!
Sometimes it will happen every week and sometimes I'll get a break for a coupe months!

Is it nerve pain? A migraine? Am I insane?
Who ever has my voodoo doll? Stop it!
I'd really like to just amputate my ear, problem solved, right?

UGH! Anyone else???????????

i KNOW THIS SOUNDS WEIRD BUT WHEN YOU BEGIN TO GET NIGHTMARES, BUY A NEW PILLOW. THE KIND OF PILLOW DOES NOT SEEM TO MATTER - JUST A NEW PILLOW. THE NEW PILLOW SEEMS TO LAST FOR A LONG TIME - YEARS UNTIL YOU START HAVING NIGHTMARES AGAIN AND NEED TO BUY ANOTHER PILLOW. iIT DOES NOT NEED TO BE EXPENSIVE - JUST SOMETHING FROM WAL-MART WILL DO. WHEN I MENTIONED THIS TO MY DAUGHTER, SHE WAS READY TO SEND ME TO THE LOONY BEND BUT NOW EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE SHE WILL SAY, I'M BEGINNING TO HAVE NIGHTMARES. I NEED TO BUY A NEW PILLOW.

Wow, I've had this problem for decades, from occasional to every night pain now, and never knew of any other sufferers. I've read over all 20 pages and think you are all correct - there are several causes and I've had them all - allergies, colds, immune disorders, TMJ and just the shape of our ears and stiffness of the cartilage, which gets stiffer with age. I've always had a hard time just finding a pillow that is thin, soft yet supportive enough to keep my neck and shoulders from hurting all day and sleeping without a pillow is comfortable only if I'm on my back, but I get lower back pain if I sleep like that more than an hour or two. But none of these also keep me totally free of ear pain, though the Sobakawa Cloud Pillow comes close. I've tried a few of the pillows with cut-outs or indentations for ears and the U-shaped travel pillows, but none were right for my neck and shoulders. One sleepless night at 3am I was rummaging around the house looking for something, anything, that could be shaped into a donut, when I came upon an old thick fleece Screamer neck warmer (a seamless tube of fleece). I opened the tube and rolled it down on itself into a donut big enough to surround my ear without touching it, put it on top of my regular pillow, put my ear in it and slept pain-free for the first time in a long time. The best thing is I just fling it in the washer and dryer it with my clothes. You could make one out of a remnant of thick fleece or sweatshirt material, or, for a no-sew solution if you have an old fleece, flannel or sweat shirt or sweatpants, just cut off an arm or leg and start rolling until you get a donut of sufficient thickness for your ear comfort. The tighter you roll, the firmer the support. Cut off the excess and voila, ear donut that can be adjusted for firmness as needed, washed and dried with clothes, works with any pillow, and is lightweight for travel.

You might have TMD, Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, makes your ear hurt like crazy especially when sitting up but is actually your jaw bone causing it not your ear at all. The reason it hurts your ear is the part of your jaw that is the cause is right there by the ear, forward / just under your ear. Worth looking into and treatments is very easy and can be handled at home. I thought for years it was my ear also, turns out my ears are fine and was my jaw all along but it pulls and tightens the surrounding area so bad you only really feel that sharp agonizing pain around your ear. A warm damn compress a d tylenol help, takes an hour or so but they help a lot.

To all on this site replying, I will tell you all to see a Dermatologists to see if some of you have what's called CNH. This has to do with chondroitin of the ear(s) and is extremely painful. I just recently had surgery for this severe problem. Hope this HELPS!!!!!
