Severe ear pain when laying on my side at night

When I lay down on my pillow on either ear, my ears burn. How to stop that?

I have had ear pain for years. It feels like a knife stabbing my ear. When I slept on either side, it would wake me up it hurt so much, but when i lifted my head to turn it hurt worse for a few minutes. I discovered if I can't sleep on a feather pillow, and I have to have my hair up. Maybe I am allergic to my own hair being pressed into my ears??? I don't know, but I do know that since I have stopped sleeping with my hair down I no longer have the pain in my ears. Thank goodness!!
