2012 July. I'm in the hospital as I wright this due to new technology of DROID phones. It amazes me how we've came so far in text/computers yet the treatment your mother got in 2006 is still the same and unless you've gave birth and had this type kidney pain one could never understand (this pain is not predigest of no form!) You wouldn't believe how I got this far?!?! Lets just say for now NOT GOOD. I have been looking (when able) to resolve this matter and plain on doing some research to control and use the best methods possible to resolve this unnecessary lack of pain~control for myself but more so for others, So So,So very sorry your mom went through this (can be prevented) painful, emotional tear-down experience Please if you have done any reasonable research on kidney pain urine retention/ fluid retention/post surgery pain do post. To my urologist Dr.W... No this is nothing like going to the dentist !?!?

Goldfish: I am so sorry for your loss. That really stinks that no one responded to your initial post. I am currently going through severe pain from a kidney infection which is how I found your post. The ER was most definately wrong in their treatment of your mother and you might want to consult an attorney for possible medical malpractice. "Third times a charm" should not occur in the ER no matter what the diagnosis is. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

Hi Goldfish,
I'm so sorry for your loss, The medical system is so broken I used to work it the system when it seemed so much better, now it seems broken and they attempt to deny services I think it is to keep cost down or they get a big fat bonus come christmas time.. Some dr are great , some are good, and some are mediocre at best, well I left the ER and for a heart pounding short of breath Benedryl and they told me to keep taking Benedryl the very thing that put in the ER I'm allergic to it but I found out four days later when my primary dr called and said stop benedryl your having a paradoxical reaction it is rare but it happens. ! Another time the dr office forgot to call me to let me know I had a bladder infection by the time they called me I was in ER with a Kidney infection ...negliglence. I would rather see a chinese medicine dr or a naturopathic they are caring compassionate and seem to be able to treat you with a formula without all the harsh side effects.

I am very sorry for your loss, and understand your anger at the healthcare system. I had a severe kidney infection back in 97 when I was only 16 and originally they said it was just the flu take tylenol and plenty of fluids...only I couldn't keep them down. After a week of non stop vomiting and pain and praying that God would just let me die because that's honestly how bad I felt, I crawled out the door (because I was too weak to stand) to my mother, I had no voice to yell for her but she says seeing me crawling accross the ground trying to get to her is an imagine she will never forget.  She rushed me to the er and when the doc pushed on my left side I came up off the table, they thought it was appendicitis but after a ct scan discovered a kidney infection that had gotten bad enough it was in my blood. I had dropped 15lbs in a week and spent a week hospitalized, I was so doped up and out of it I don't really remember any of that, but I left that hospital weighing 95lbs. They assume I have a double collecting system on my left kidney but no follow up was ever done. Now I need a hysterectomy and have ovarian cysts, frequent bladder infections and UTI's but as I have no health insurance it's hard to get proper help. Recently I was back at the ER for kidney issues they found blood in my urine so sent me home with antibiotic, meds for naseua, and 2 day supply of pain meds, the antibiotic broke me out in a weird rash, but I finished it anyway and I'm pretty sure the infection is back...still having all the pain, fevers, naseua, no appetitie but hate going to the ER I always feel like they treat me like I'm seeking pain meds, even though I never ask for them.. I feel if I had health insurance maybe I would be taken more serious. Good luck to everyone on here I hope you find the help you need.

i have the same thing...Dr was an expert in kidney infections/UTI? He put on emergency IV treatment, told me only way to treat advanced kidney infection is to pump antibiotics thru IV. I have pain killers and more antibiotics to take.....Kaiser is sh*t excuse for health care!!

Deeply sorry for your loss, I read your story over and over again and cannot come to terms with how pathetic the health system is. May your mother rest in peace. It is a real eye opener for myself as I have experienced similar problems. I suffered from a sudden pain in my right lower abdomen and fainted as the pain was unbearable, I was taken into ER, given morphine, prescribed anti-biotics for a kidney infection and was told to drink plenty of water. 3 weeks later and the problem is back, however not AS painful. This time my doctor said it is a UTI, something which I have had 5 times in the past year. Out of worry, I asked for a scan but doctor refused and said 'this is normal, just drink water and you will be fine'. I do drink plenty of water, at least 3litres a day as I hate the painful burning sensation so always try to avoid it. But the problem is still there. I always take my anti-biotics. What more can I do?
