Hi, my mother has suffered from TMJ for a long time. She uses too many pain killers and no doctor hasn’t suggested her a splint or surgery. I believe that there must be some beneficial treatment for her too. What is better a splint or surgery?

Certainly, there is always possibility for improvement of somebody’s condition specially in this field of maxillofacial surgery. But, an evaluation whether a splint would do the work or a surgery needs to be done, should be estimated only by professional maxillofacial surgeon. My brother in law ha TMJ and suffered a lot before he decided to try a splint. It took him a lot of time to get used to splint but after this period he was relieved. No more constant troubling with eating and his occasional headaches also stopped. If impaired jaws worsen then an surgery is the last solution for improving patient’s health.
