HI all, I have recurring shooting pains behind my left eye, and once in a while shooting pains at the top of my head. Over the years I have complained of my eyes twitching, ears ringing, etc. Dr's chalked it up to my hypothyroid (treated w/medication) and my sinus infections (I get about 2 a year). 2 years ago, ringing in the ears, eye twitching, dizziness once in a while. I went to a NEURO who said "It's probably your thyroid" but did not send me for any tests. 1 year ago, went to an ENT who sent me for a cat scan that showed a mildly deviated septum and minor inflammation but no chronic sinusitis. My last MRI was of my cervical spine back in 2002 where they told me I had degenerative disc disease and a bulging disc at C5-C6, I was 33 at the time of the MRI and they said that was young for DDD. Today I went to another eye dr. for much of the same (twitching, ear ringing) and the latest shooting pains behind the left eye and pains on top of the head. The eye dr. said my exam was normal as well as my visual field tests, etc. He said "it could be your sinuses or maybe your thyroid" so here I am at the computer w/the shooting pains. I know I am not a hypochrondiac, although I get the feeling the drs' think I am. Any advice? Did this happen to you? I don't know how the shooting pain in the top of my head could be my sinuses or thyroid...anyone? 8)

Have you tried any pain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen? A head and neck massage or facial may help. Have you considered visiting a chiropractic doctor for spinal adjustment?

:-D Hi yes, I have actually, haven't been to a chiropractor in a long time, that is why I don't know if it could be my neck. It's very annoying, I take aspirin or ibuprofen (varies) almost everyday. Just confusing wish I could get a definite answer and move on (correct meds, or exercises if my neck) etc. Thank you for responding. have a good night.

Hi, I happen to bump into this page searching for something and discovered that what you described is what my friend went through where she got stabbing sharp pain on the left side of the brain, behind the left eye, and top of the top. She got this from work injury. There was a 6% muscle tear along the side of her left neck just below her left ear. I don't know what muscle it was. There was probably more to the injury than just the muscle tear, because afer she went to see an eastern chiropractor to have her neck adjusted, the sharp pain improved dramatically after the first session. After about 4-5 sessions, she was cured. She had this for 6-7months.
Do you have neck pain? Because 99% of the time, your symptons are caused by your neck in which the vertabra(e) misalignment pinches on your nerves that run up to your head. Do you also have aching left shoulder pain? If you do, that exacerbates the nerves/muscles that run up to your head. Make sure you don't roll over and sleep on your left shoulder because any shoulder pain is going to strain your neck muscle and the tight muscle in your neck is going to put a strain on the nerves that runs up to your head.
If you live in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend seeing Dr. Mark Cheng here http://chung-hua.com/tuina.html. He is using eastern chiropractic approach called tui na to cure me of my brain tremor due to my vertebra misalignment and my friend. Good luck!

I have a friend that had stabbing pain on the left side of the head, behind the left eye, top of the head and left side of the neck, pretty what you all are describing here. She had this for 6+ months and finally went to see to a chiropractor to have her neck adjusted and it took about 4-6 sessions to heal it. She had a work injury by lifting a heavy equipment which caused the left side of the neck a 6% muscle tear. This muscle tear strained the nearby muscle group which then caused muscle tension that pinched on the nerves running up to the head and left eye. Migraine, and constant headaches are almost always caused by problem in the neck such as a misalignment of the vertebra due to work injury, auto accident, awkward sleeping position for the neck, or whatnot. Also, if you have constant aching shoulders, that will definitely strain your neck and contribute to your head pain. In this case, make sure you don't roll over at night and sleep on your shoulder because this will aggravate it.
For quick relief of your headache, or to temporary reduce it, have someone deep-massage the affected area of the neck. If your left side of the head hurts, massage the left side of the neck. Also, deep-massage along the base of the skull on the side of the head that you have the headache.
For permanent relief, try seeing a chiropractor. For me, I used to sleep in an awkward position where my neck is bent sideward through out the night and this caused constant pain on my left side of the neck. Somehow this affected the left side of my brain and caused brain tremor which led to constant anxiety and nervousness problem.
Good luck!

Hi,
I just wanted to comment on the face that I know what you are going through. I two was just diagnosed with a goiter hypothyroidism. I also have disc degeneration's in the same disc 5,6,7. I go to the chiropractor 2-3 times a week. I recently had a proceedure done Manipulation under Anesthsia..7 shots in my spine...for cervical, lumbar and sacrum..for sciatica. As of today I am much better....pain free. I also wear orthothics to help keep my spine properly aligned. Boron...is a something that persons are deficient in, who have disc degeneration. Detoxification, Vitamins, supplementation, and exercise is crucial for anyone trying to gain control over there health...or preventive measures to keep good health.
However, I believe THE PAIN BEHIND THE LEFT EYE is due to sinus problems. Right now as we speak I have a bad cold w/yellow mucus. I have this pain behind my left eye occasionally it does come and goes. Right now it is worst, it is hurting more frequently. It is not an excruciating pain, very antagonizing at the least. It is probably a cause for concern. I am a person who seldom gets headaches. My blood pressure is always low to normal. I don't get colds often either.
In having the MRI done for my cervical 2 months ago, they did see a goiter...I am currrently taking Iodoral with vitamins supplements for my hypothyroidism....and my multinodular goiter is shrinking (only been one week). Immediately after finding out about my goiter, I started doing Iodine painting and taking Liquid Kelp daily. I lost ten pounds from that alone. I will have another ultrasound in one month to document progress of the goiter. Other than this bad cold (sinus infection)......I feel pretty good. I hope something here helps.

:-D Hi everyone, I am finally back on here after a long hiatus.... I ended up in physical therapy for my neck being strained. This helped the shooting pains but the pain behind my left eye is still there... CT SCAN of head OK. I also am now experiencing raynauds syndrome (fingers turn white/blue pins and needles). Dr.'s are doing blood work to ck my Vitamin D levels, thyroid etc. Not sure what it is, I am thinking I just need an MRI of the head and neck...maybe something is compressed in my neck...that is the update for now, hope all of you are well!

I really appreciate that you came back because I was just taking a look at this thread not too long ago and I almost posted to ask you how you are doing because it sounded like it was quite painful and that you were going through a hard time so I'm glad to hear that the physical therapy was able to help you out at least a bit! Thanks again for coming back and come back and let us knkow how things go after your MRI okay?

I have the pain behind my left eye, I also get the eye twitching, but the doctor said I do not have sinus problems, or a neck problem, or a back problem. It comes on suddenly lasts for a couple of hours, and then goes away. I even sometimes get it in the right eye, but more commonly with the left. It is painful at its worst point, and just bothersome at its least point. I have tried every pain reliever out there and nothing makes it go away any sooner.

I just wanted to let you guys on this page know that I had the same symptoms and I had a root canal that kinda didn't feel right. There was no infection or anything but I think that I was allergic to the filling stuff. I got it out and all those symptoms were gone. I always kinda thought it was the root canal but I didn't want to lose the tooth so I kept calling myself crazy. It turns out I wasn't crazy and feel a lot better that I did before.
