Hello ,
My dad, 71 years old had to have a lung surgery to remove a suspicious mass that turned out to be cancerous. We thought that the worst is over, because there was no other possible metastasis on any of the scans he had before the procedure. However, as soon as my husband and I came in for a post-op visit, his surgeon started asking us questions about my dad cognitive abilities, if he behaved unusual or was he forgetting things… few days later it became pretty obvious why was he asking all this.
When we came into the room, it seemed like my dad only recognized me and thought my husband was a physician. It seemed like he had no idea what kind of surgery he had. I don’t know if anyone has been in this situation, but few days before the surgery dad was completely aware of what is going on and now it seems like he has gone senile. Is there any reason why would lung surgery cause this?

Hi Guest,
It's probably more due to the anesthesia they used than the lung surgery itself.
It's called Post Operative Cognitive Disorder - POCD.
His memory may improve as time passes.
Wish I had more for you. The doctor/surgeon/anesthesiologist may be able to help.
Good luck.
