Hello
Recently my dad broke his leg and went into hospital. Whilst there he couldnt drink any more and seems to have severe dementia and confusion.
The doctors tell me this is due to his alcohol dependency and withdrawal symptoms but I after 13 days I would assume he would have got better.
He has had 1 operation and several anaesthetics, along with the associated pain relief (e.g. morphine.) to make matters worse he has been fasted 4 times over course of the period awaiting the operation.
Can someone please help me by answering following few questions
- before going to hospital my dad was mentally 100% but from Day 1 was forgetting people, babbling (e.g. thought he was in jail, or had to go to work etc) Is this normal?
- How long should alcohol withdrawal symptoms last?
- is there anything we can give him to help speed up his recovery (or will he ever fully recover)
This is a very worrying time for our family and any help or advice much appreciated,
thanks

Oh man, this is terrible. This can last months...depends really on the person and the situation around him. Just be supportive and understanding because this will not go away easily and will likely be very disruptive. As long as he doesn't drink I would expect on and off problems for at least 6 months to a year.

Thanks for your thoughts - I have read a bit more about it and found a couple of links - some of them depressing. (cant post links so if you are interested search for "Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome" - it talks about the lacking of thiamine in alcoholics and the impact it causes.
Anyone in the same position (or been through it before) your thoughts are welcome as we dont think the above syndrome is the issue as we believe the hospital has been giving him thiamine.
Thanks again
