When my daugther was 6 and a half years old she had bladder reconstruction surgery to remove an ureterocele, tighten the neck of the bladder and re-implant her ureters.

What we didn't know at the time was that a common side effect of bladder operations was painful bladder spasms. The surgeon never mentioned this aspect of the operation.

I have researched the issue ever since my daughter's pain got better and I haven't been able to find enough information on this issue, therefore I have written our story so other people going through the same can get a personal account.

I read your blog last night and first I thought I should keep it to myself but then shared it with my husband. Our daughter is schedual for operation to reimplant the ureters this Friday the 10 of October 2008.

I didn't what to upset my husband but then realized I was not supper mom. We have a pre op sched for Tuesday. I will be asking question about bladderspasms.

My question is if you knew then what you know now, would you still went through with the surgery?

Hi
We still would have gone through with the operation because we had no option. The outcome outweighs the pain the child may suffer I think. For us at least it worked that way. My daughter had to have something done to fix her constant infections and taking antibiotics every day since she was born. It wasn't worth it anymore.

It's not a given your child will be in pain. What I would have preferred was to have known beforehand so we could have planned ahead the management rather than just find out about it 15 minutes before the operation. I guess I would have liked to talk with the surgeon about it and know the options.

Good luck with it.

You can read other families' experiences there too. I've also listed drugs and techniques used by other parents to ease the pain. For us nothing seemed to work, just time.

Cheers

I had this surgery as well, however was proscribed ditropan for the bladder spasms and this worked perfect. I guess it's specifically used for bladder spasming. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Ditropan is one of the typical medications. We weren't offered that drug. Maybe it's not approved for use in Australia. I don't really know. I've collected a list of medications and other strategies to cope with bladder spasms in kids after surgery. You can find this list by googling "Side effects of ureteral re-implantation: bladder spasms" - don't forget to include the quotes in the search field.

I am so relieved to read all of these posts. My son had bilateral urethral reimplantation on Wed Feb 6th 2013 and the doctor made it seem like he would be discharged friday from the hospital and back to school in a week. We were discharged yesterday. He has been complaining of pain in his bottom and burning in his penis. I called the md on call and the doctor said it sounds like bladder spasms, common after this type of surgery. If so common, why did no one prepare us for this? He screams out in pain and hits the couch and screams out in severe pain..lasting 30 minutes-1 hour. His doctor will not order he ditropan because of the side effects so now we are trying to warm water while he urinates and am going to try a heating pad. Thank you so much for this website.

I was born with an inverted bladder and immediately had surgery within hours to correct it. At age 7 or 8 I had another operation. I am 54 years old now and would like to know anything about this disorder. Thank you.
