I am 16 years old and I just had my tonsils taken out 6 days ago. The day I got back from my surgery I was having a Mountain Dew and yelling at my friend for not coming and seeing me. I was able to talk. It did not bother me too much. I was not so tired but i did rest. After the first day though it was terrible. I could not swallow. I could not eat. I could hardly open my mouth. I felt the nausea and I vomited alot. I took both the steroid and pain killers as they were prescribed. I have had the bad breathe and the white gunk in the back of my throat. i had trouble sleeping. i would wake up and feel like I was being stabbed in the throat. So I then had to take my pain medicine to go back to sleep. I was very irritable. I got mad at anything. I was so hungry the whole time and I still am. I am almost a week in and still can only have jello and pudding. I tried to eat soft chicken nuggets and rice and mashed potatoes but it felt like it was just going where my tonsils used to be. I don't like the feeling of having something stuck in the back of my mouth. I want so bad to eat what my family is eating. I have really been craving a philly cheese steak from Dominoes. I even have the money for it but I don't think I could handle all that right now. I want to know how much longer this my mouth be like this. I don't really have the pain anymore. Slightly but it is manageable. I just don't eat due to the fact that I always feel like the food is not going down my throat just staying in the back. I guess you would say that my healing took longer than everyone's I read. I was talking to my dad about that and he said it was more than likely due to the fact I smoke and that does no good on the throat. But I just want to be able to eat. I like to eat and I just really want to cry. i I guess you could also say that I feel deprived of my food. Not so nice. I am determined to get better soon though so that I can go to Dominoes and get my Philly. I am so looking forward to it. I will honestly say that smoking made my recovery period take longer than everyone else i have heard from. I think that is a sign that I should stop!!!! !

I completely agree with you! I do appreciate that you've posted this cautionary tale for people who have not undergone the surgery yet but this is very important to bear in mind! How are you feeling now?
