I have been spotting for basically a month and I don't know why. What should I do?

It is obvious you need to see a gynecologist. A month of spotting is clearly indicating that something’s wrong. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it is extremely serious but it does mean that you should have it checked.
There are many things that could be causing spotting and they include both “female” problems as well as other medical problems.
For example, a thyroid disorder could be messing with your periods as well as any other systemic disease such as diabetes.
As for the “female” problems, you could be having troubles with hormonal imbalance, you could have a vaginal infection (including STD), you could have developed cysts on ovaries, fibroids in the uterus, polyps on the cervix or inside the uterus, endometriosis, or you could be approaching menopause. As you can see, there is a wide range of possibilities and many of them are age-dependant.
The only way to find out what the problem may be is to contact your gynecologist.

I called Planned Parenthood and they said that it's normal to bleed during the first trimester of pregnancy. Are you pregnant?
If not, stress can also play a huge part in prolonging your monthly. I, too, have been bleeding for a little over a month. I think I am pregnant, but I don't know for sure yet. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much. And don't bother looking it up on the internet. They tend to exaggerate things. All the other websites will tell you its "cancer, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, ect." Planned Parenthood said it's all very rare that any of these things are the case. If you suspect something is seriously wrong, feel free to call your doctor.

I've been spotting for three weeks now between two periods (with a four day break around ovulation time), and my gyno appointment is tomorrow.
My periods have always been very regular; this has NEVER happened to me before.
I know for a fact that something- minor or major- is very very wrong, and that being the case I'd rather catch it sooner than later.
Please do not listen to anyone (including a doctor!) who tells you that extended spotting outside your regular menses is "normal" or "not that big a deal".
It may or may not be that big a deal but it's definitely not normal, and your body is letting you know something's wrong and asking you to seek help.
Please don't ignore this. Call your doctor and schedule an appointment today. If you're uninsured, go to PP or another clinic, or simply go to the emergency room if there's no alternative.
Worst case scenario is, it could be cancer.
