One of the side effects of lithium is acid reflux which can cause you to vomit in your sleep and in the worst case if your wind pipe is blocked due to vomit matter you choke and therefore are at risk of death or coma due to aphixiation which leads to hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain).

Yes I have now had an abdominal pain for 2 weeks on 500 mg Lithium Carbonate. It is a known side effect. Don't let anybody fool you into thinking that bipolar people suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. I had a perfectly healthy gut for years. Also I weened myself off lithi carb for years and had a happy, perfect life with travel, art and active social life. After a bout of serious insomnia caused by a migrating bird calling at 3.30 am for 2 months my GP rang the local hospital. A Dr 'Helen' rang me stating she was calling under a Community Health Order and I HAD to go in for treatment. She prescribed an outrageous amount of lithium carbonate ie 500 mg at night and 250 mg per day (on record I photographed this). Also my tenant came in as a witness. I found out 10 days later from the NSW Mental Health Advocate in Burwood that she had lied. There was and is no CTO. To get one there is a process. A Hearing, Tribunal and an 'Order' is made IF deemed necessary. No paperwork, not hearing, no tribunal. The Mental Health Advocate rang me back and said this was a serious breach. Fortunately my tenant is witness to all. So don't let anyone 'professional' hoodwink you into thinking your abdominal pains are normal. Also read The Brain's Way of Healing Itself by Dr Norman Doidge. He says too often Drs don't listen to the patient, hand out a bag of pills and wait for 'lab' results.

I have been taking Lithium for over 6 months & had Nashua & stomach cramps, plus I began to put weight on even though I was burning up 900 calls at the gym a week, so my consultant has advised I come off slowly. I am down to 100 mugs since Sunday but have been having cramps with severe pain and running to the toilet at least 9 times today. I do also have an IBS diagnosis, but don't think this is connected. I'm very aware that stomach cramps is one of the major side effects to first going on lithium as it happens to me the first week then it subsided. Bear with it that's my advice.

My doctor didn't tell me until I was already taking 900mg for over a month that you shouldn't take more than 600mg at a time. I was experiencing over half the serious side effects before being told I was poisoning myself. Now I'm taking 600mg am and 600mg pm. Severe stomach discomfort. Random dizziness. Hazy forgetfulness. But on a good note, no depression or suicidal ideation apart from when I'm feeling so sick I think death might be more comfortable. I've tried countless meds since diagnosed type 2 bipolar at 16.... Thanks to fluoxetine Prozac, giving my doctors the needed push to see I was more than just a hormonal, depressed girl. I'm now 29 and on the seemingly, never ending road to recovery

I know i just think there has to be medication that doesnt muck up your health like this!!!! i was on a strange combination with lamotrigine and venlafaxine which arent normally prescribed together but it worked a treat for me for 10 years then i lost my mam and with stress from my living situation i got further and further into a suicidal state so put myself in hospital i let them change my medication first they tried reci..blah bah then onto lithium as i was in a mess with the first one but lithium has had no good effect what so ever i am lost and really need help but not looking forward to coming off lithium and dont even know if the damage can be reversed now anyways but....pfffttt! god knows!!!! mental health help in uk is...BAD

My mind is what matters to me. My stomach hurts but it's better than being held captive by my brain.

I take lithium 300mg each twice a day so 600mg each day. I took it last night and then around 9am I started having on and off mild stomach pains. It's 10:47am and took my medication a few minutes ago (so I took it about 10:42). I thought maybe it has to do something with a symptom of not taking my medication.

I used to have an iron stomach before starting Lithium. I was on 900mg for 8 months and my stomach kind of grew a tolerance for it. We just changed my dose to 1,200mgs and I can’t take the stomach pain and vomiting. If I don’t eat I throw up. If I eat it feels like my stomach is on fire.

Been on 1500mg of lithium a day for 3 weeks. 600 am and 900 pm.
The stomach pains are becoming unbearable. I am afraid to leave the house because I may not be able to find a bathy when I need one.
