Please listen to your teachers and doctor. ADD and ADHD tend to start showing up at around 4-5 years old. A short attention span at that age can be normal, but an inability to focus or to stay on task is not. My son went undiagnosed until his freshman year in high school. (20 years ago) He was not hyperactive either. Kids with ADD or ADHD are not crazy! Their brain chemicals do not work quite right. Communication between the brain cells is incomplete or not happening at all. This is physical/chemical issue, not a mental illness. These kids suffer humiliation, teasing, frustration and harassment because of their learning differences. Most kids with ADD/ADHD have above average intelligence. My own son's math teacher called me after he was on ritalin for a week. She said, OMG he is a genius in math! I never knew." She thought he was a pest for raising his hand too much in class. Can you imagine his frustration? He graduated high school with honors and went on to college where he did very well.. Kids with untreated ADD have a high incidence of drug and alcohol abuse. Kids treated for the disorders often go on to do great things. My son has! He has two kids, one with ADD, and one with ADHD, but who better to raise and understand them. Good luck to you and your son. :)

Your reply to this poor poster makes zero sense. On one hand you are complaining about the chemicals and the other you are telling this mom to give her 4 year old drugs. Then on another note, you are saying it's normal for 4 year olds to not pay attention (I agree with you here). Guess what? Doctors prescribe drugs to as a solution to everything. Does not mean you have to take them, it does make you ignorant for not just giving such a young child brain altering medication. If 4 years from now the child has not matured or responded to more natural interventions and strategies and is truly suffering at school, that's more reasonable. Good luck mom, your child is lucky to have you!

I am taking Strattera now for about a month. I am a 35 YO male. This drug has made me turn into a raging lunatic. It started about a week ago, I went into a gas station asked the attendant if he has any peanut butter for my crackers. The attendant replied "NO", I got so mad I began cussing him out throwing bags of chips in the air and finally peeing in the doorway....by the way one side effect is it is hard to pee. Anyway I was arrested for public display and misconduct. I was released 2 days later. So I was not taking the Staterra those 2 days and felt just fine. Then I started the med again and went to a theme park. I was so impatient waiting to ride the roller coaster, getting mad again. I then took off my pants and crapped myself. Seriously crapped myself so others would get out of line when I pulled it out of my underwear. I rubbed dookie in some ladys hair and threw it in a guys face. I was tackled by a off duty cop, waiting in line. I was then put in handcuffs and escorted off the premises. My mom bailed me out of Jail and now I have a court date next week. Looking at 3-5 yrs. Don't take Strattera.

Hey if you choose to give your child legal amphetamines go for it. I would never give my child a drug that is a molecule away from meth amphetamine. Not selfish, but a premed who knows alot about biochemistry

I don't blame the mother for not wanting to put her 4yr old on meds. On the flip side if I would have listened to my son's teachers and gotten him help for his ADD in the first grade he probably wouldn't have flunked 4th grade. He is now 10yrs old and is on Strattera which is a non stimulant but has very bad side affects. His stomachache hurts all of the time and I'm afraid of the future side affects that could permanently effect him sexually. I'm stuck in a rock and a hard place. Not sure what to do:(

Your ridiculous. I am now 25 years old and have dealt with ADHD my entire life. I was diagnosed as a child and have never been treated for it. I WISH i had parents that believed in the power of medication back then because NOW i deal with anxiety and depression due to the ADHD. No form of natural BS or counseling has ever helped. You have no clue what your talking about and its bad parenting for them to just "pop their bottoms" when they literally can not help it. Your disgusting.

I've been diagnosed with ADHD twice. I was originally on Ritalin, but there were too many negative side effects affecting me. I changed to Concerta, which has helped a lot, but occasionally I get extreme lows. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the medication, but assuming it is, I'm being changed to atomoxetine in a couple of weeks. The specialist said it could decrease anxiety too, which is one of the reasons I'm going to trial it. Does anyone know any different?

Yeah i was put on vyvanse and lamictal when i was younger and as i got older i think it possibly screwed me up. plus I had like 10 misdiagnoses and I honestly think you should never put a person on any extreme meds until they have developed into a young adult to Adult because it could have long lasting problems.
