My son is experiencing suboxin withdrawls. He has been on subox for 30 days and having a difficult time comming off the suboxin. He thinks the oxycotion withdrawl may be worse, but wont' last as long. He is considering stopping the suboxin and returning to a minuum amount (10 mg) oxy and weaning down from there. Is this a bad idea?

It really isn’t a good idea for your son to switch to Oxycontin. He will need much larger dose of Oxycontin and that even can make things a lot worse. Not only that he will need more time to get off of it, but there is a really big chance that he won’t be able to do that as easily (not exactly the right word because neither of two withdrawals is easy at all) as he eventually might with Suboxone. And the Oxycontin withdrawal would be a lot worse. He should continue tapering down Suboxone but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take some medicine like Xanax or Lorazepam only during first week so that he can handle symptoms better. But be careful with these two medicines as well because they are also addictive in the long run.
