Glad it is not just me too. I get a sudden twitch, throwing my head to the left, about 60 degrees. Usually my neck pops, so when it happens in public I play it off like I did it on purpose to pop my neck. But it is totally involuntary. Weirdly, it only seems to happen when I am thinking or, more accurately, "feeling" deeply, totally weird to say, but I thought I would throw it out there, it's like I am feeling something deep in my chest and just when I feel like I am going to think of something or realize something, BANG! There goes my head to the left, accompanied by the shiver up my spine. I was thinking of going to a hypno-therapist to see if I know what is up about it under hypnosis.

My 11 year old has the same neck jerking and he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. There are days you can hear the popping sounds and he complains and cry's that his neck hurts so bad, the only relaxation he gets is when he's sleeping. He takes clonidine and to me it only helps him sleep and don't really help his neck jerking. You need a Neurologist to help, you could be having a seizure of some sort also.

Hi. I have lived with this for about 10 years and was diagnosed just last year. It is called cervical dystonia or spasmodic torticollis. There is no cure for it. It is a neurological disorder. Most neurologists want to give you botox injections, but I will not take them. There are some neck exercises that you can do for dystonia that will help alleviate the build-up and frequency of the episodes. I have also found that reducing or eliminating caffeine makes a HUGE difference. Also, getting massages do help.

Do you have silver fillings (called amalgam fillings)? If so, you might want to check into having them removed by a holistic dentist. The Mercury in these fillings does effect the nervous system in some people. I am not saying this is the problem, only one thing you might want to consider. I had 29 symptoms of mercury poisoning and my doctor had no idea what was wrong.

I've been dealing with this random spasm motion for around two years now and just now decided to research it. I just turned 20 and the past couple weeks my spasms have picked up even more. For me, it's not uncommon to have this jerking motion three times a day. It starts between my shoulder blades. It shoots up my neck all while shooting out to my shoulders. Unlike some other people here, my shoulders and neck almost always twitch simultaneously. My shoulders shoot behind me whilst my head tilts 90 degrees to the left. My head usually touches my shoulder. Occasionally my head turns and tilts. I've been looking for months now to see what possibly could be causing this. It seems one of my triggers is when someone is behind me and I can't see them. Or when I think someone is behind me. But like most, it is totally random and I have no real idea what causes this. I get so many looks from people when I do it in public. Nothing really I can control. Some things I also have problems with that could cause this to stem from is I have severe anxiety issues. Primarily social anxiety. Nothing diagnosed, but I do struggle in highly populated areas. And, yes, I do tend to have spasms then as well.

I'm 30 and I've had this for as long as I can remember, so at least 15 years or so. My memory on specific dates and listing things has never been great, so I can't say for certain how often it happens, but I'd say from once every two weeks, to two times a day. While it's never permanently increased in amount or severity, I can say it's more common when I'm stressed. It feels like a building up in the upper back and where my neck meets and then the release with a jerk to either side, usually accompanied by a shoulder shrug on the same side. I get a shiver at the same time that 'ripples' down through my body. And while in public, it does make me self conscious, it actually feels good and I enjoy it in private. It's like a 'release' or scratching an itch. I've never gone to a doctor about it, because I'm not good at explaining myself and they never seem to really listen, and it hasn't gotten worse. I do worry about it when I'm stressed, as I've a few other 'tics' that make me wonder if I have light tourettes or OCD or something. But like I said, I'm not great at gathering evidence and I figure it'll be wasted on whomever I see.
