Hey, i've got to say thanks for all your information everybody has been posting on this site it has made me feel terrified and also well informed about this topic. You see i've been dealing with bleeding hemorrhoids for about 5 years now and at the beginning of this year I decided to do something about it. I went to the doctors and saw a specialist in Brisbane and ended up having a colonoscopy & 3 internal bandings.
After the operation NO information was given to me on what to expect, except don't go to the toilet !! (what the hell did they mean by that?) well, i tell you i found out. After i left the hospital with my wife i started like i wanted to pee & pee & pee. I thought what the hell is going on ? No one told me about this is this normal and after reading on this site it seems very normal but WHY didn't the doctor tell me about this?
So i walked around and around the house just feeling like S*^T and trying to figure out what to expect so i decided to run a VERY hot bath WHAT A GODSEND. Took a few panadol and WOW 15 min later i was in heaven NO PAIN!!
A couple on months later the same proble returned no bleeding but a protusion. So i went ans saw the wonderful Professor and yes he is a Professor not a doctor to get some more bandings and told him my story. His response was like that shouldn't have happened WTF!! is this guy really a Professor?? oh one thing i forgot to mention was straight after the bandings in the recovery room they gave me bloody coffee. Everybody knows what instant coffeee does it wants to make you go to the toilet NOT A GOOD IDEA people.
So after my first proceedure i was not aware what to expect so i did a lot of pushing in the bath to try and pee and i think i undid the work of the bandings this is why i think i needed to go back for the second set of bandings.
Now it's been a couple of months after the 2nd set of bandings, which i was a bit better prepared for i think i' either up a a third round of banding or the DREADED SURGERY !!! but i'm a bit chicken. So i think i'll go for the banding instead and this time taking it really easy for the first couple of months as after the first 4 weeks on both occasions i started up my cycling (60km) every 2nd day which i think has bought on the 2nd and 3rd lot of hemorrhoids. So i'm still deciding what to do and what type of procedure to have the standard surgery, the Stapled surgery using that plunger gun thing or Lazer surgery.

Hi Craig! I'm so glad to hear that the site was able to help you out with your issue. Which surgery have you decided to go with? Have you decided yet or are you going to be making up your mind later? Let me know!

I think i'll do one more banding and if that does not work i'll then go for the TDH Surgery but i do not want to go for the Hemorroidectomy

I know that a hemmorhoidectomy would be painful and the recuperation time is long but I think that ultimately it would be worth it if it means an increase in your quality of life. What do you think? Have you learned much about hemorrhoidectomies?

Well after doing a lot of research and i lot of help from the people on this forum, i've decided to go for the THD/DG-HAL treatment as it seams to have the same outcome but no where near the downtime or the pain level. All i have to do now is find a surgen to do the proceedure.

Hi craig, sorry to jump in this thread like this, but I was wondering if you have done THD surgery? If you have it would be very nice if you could give us some info.
Cheers.

Not as yet I'm still trying to find a surgeon that will do this proceedure. My backend hasn't been annoying me of much late so I've also been a bit slack. More than likely i'll get it done in the New year when the kids go back to school.

But is it manageable till then? How is your pain?
It would be good if you are able to find a surgeon so you could do it as soon as possible.

I don't suffer from pain because with internal ones you don't feel them or notice them until they bleed or pop out after a day of heavy lifting or long boughts or exersize. So i'm pretty lucky in that way. But one thing that has helped out is changing what I now eat. I'm now a vegan with a very high fiber intake. This has helped so much it's amazing, I think it's even reduced my symtems some what.

You might have to dial back the fiber after surgery. I know some people who have a very hard time passing after they go under--temporarily, of course--because the stool is too hard. I just thought I'd give you an update on that at least. ;)

Well I'm finally booked into my THD/HAL surgery next week on the 22nd i'll try and keep you posted on how everything goes on a day to day basis if I can.

Hi Craig,

Well where do i start !! Had my THD/HAL surgery yesterday and there was a lot more prolapse than expected. Came out of surgery and woke up with quite a bit of pain nurses gave me 8mls of morphine and that did the trick. In recovery was there for about 2 hours waiting the pain started to come back and so had some DI-Gesic (dextropropoxyphene Hydrochloride) this is the strongest pain meds available that don't cause constipation. In the post-op recovery room had to wait till i went for a pee before i could go home DIDN"T HAPPEN !!! waited and waited ended up staying in hospital for the whole night.
Though out the night managed to go to the toilet (the sound of running water really does the trick) tried to stay off the pain meds that only lasted 4 hours (don't do it) back at home now still quite sore and not looking forward to my first BM OUCH!!!
haven't really had much to eat in 3 days 3 sandwiches 4 biscuits couple of soft drinks (sodas) and about 4 coffees (instant YUCK) and a couple of pieces of fruit i think my first main meal will be tonight Vegetable Soup with stool softeners sounds yummy hey.

Well it's been just over 48 hours since my THD surgery and all is going fine hardly any pain left and I think I can give up the pain meds.
I've worked out that if you take pain meds you move around a lot more so when you walk you don't notice your bum hurting therefore you irritate the affected area without noticing it. When the pain meds wear off it starts hurting again so you take more pain meds to stop the pain and the cycle repeats itself (hope this makes sense). I'm not saying don't take the pain meds just try and limit your movement.
What you could do is lay down in a comfortable position as long as possible as this will stop the rubbing of the affected area and also stop the inflamation of the area as well. Still haven't gone to the toilet as yet, all that is passing is gas. Only eating small Soup meals and taking stool softener after every meal as well. If you have completely emptied your bowels before surgery this will help in the process as well as i think the longer it takes to do a no. 2 the better as it will give more time for the skin to heal before stretching again for a B.M
(what do you think?).
I can feel when i pass gas that my rectum is tight not too sure how to get around that tomorrow is day three and that is the day i'm expecting my first BM still not looking forward to it. I'm still taking 2 -3 warm salt baths a day to help with the healing process and it's also nice and relaxing. A nurse friend of mine suggested that doing the first BM in the bath would be a lot easier as well i'd hate to say it but i would have to agree with her just not looking to cleaning up the mess afterwards or the smell, just that lying down does take a lot of pressure off your backside. Only time will tell.

Craig,
I am located in Missouri and am set to meed a doctor about the THD surgery in the next week. I am really interested in your recovery and how it goes. The main reason I am looking into THD is because of the reported ease of recovery and minimal pain. Any and all updates will be very appreciated.
