I was thinking about having birth control pills lately. I wanted to visit my gynecologist, but before this, I have some questions. Can you tell me when usually should woman start using pills, I mean which day of cycle. How long does it take until I can consider myself safe of unwanted pregnancy? I am also interested what happened if I forget to take my pill on vacation, is it interrupting my protection.

Before I give you any answer I have to tell you always need to keep in you mind that birth control pills would not protect you of STD’s. Further, you should never start using pills before you check that with your gynecologist. He needs to make examine of you, he needs to talk to you and take history, and he should take blood to make some testing. This is the only right way for woman to start with birth control. This must be done because some diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or so many others, contraindicate usage of the pills. You should first be sure you are going to be safe during month with the pills, no matter which brand name you choose. When you will start, depends what your doctor told you, for example you might start your first pack of birth control pills on the Sunday, during or immediately following your menstrual period. Theoretically, your pills are effective from the seventh day if you start using the Sunday Start or the Day 5 Start cycle, but you should not consider yourself safe until the end of the first cycle. It is extremely important you do not stop or forget your pill, even on vacation, because then you are not protected of unwanted pregnancy
