Hello to everyone who is having swelling throat issues. I have discovered that it is caused by a "glutamic acid and tartaric acid" issue with my body. I had a swollen hard knot right behind my uvula and when I eliminated gluten (flour & msg) from my diet it disappeared. A couple of years later I learned that apples and any vegetable with glutamic acid made my throat feel like it was swelling. Check out:
celiac.org; celiac.com msgmyth.com
These sites have information on glutamic acid. It will be worth your time to change your diet and keep a food and symptom log.
Good Luck

I have also had problems with my throat in the past. I have found my cure, now I will hopefully help others find theirs.

Here is my story.....

When I was about 16 years old. I had alot of unprotected sex; the idea of or thought of consequences had never plagued me. Never paid attention in school even when I was there, which I practicly never was. Anyways after having multiple sexual relationships with various males and females(I am a bisexual latino). I started to notice a bump on my penis which made me very nervous. I was never concerned about std's because I never really knew about them. As my anxiety first began...I started to freak out, I was in panic. I soon found my way on to the internet, searching through std's. I didn't know what I had, but the more I seen the symptoms the more my anxiety had plagued psychical symptoms. A week passed by, and shortly after, I started to recieve a spotchy rash all over my chest, so again I started to panic again... weeks gone by and the rash had consumed my entire body, but only when I was really nervous, or i felt hot. I kept looking at the internet and don't really remember, but I firmly remember being scared of HIV, because being a bisexual latino, thats high risk all alone.. So I started obsession about the idea that i may have HIV. I had panic attacks, racing heart beat, chronic fatigue, a huge rash, nobody I could talk too, and if I did have HIV, I was convinced I would kill myself, because the pain would be unbareable. Anways to make a long story short. I did not get myself tested until four years later, which I turned out to be negative. But, I still had all of the phsyical symptoms of something wrong. For years and years, I had analyzed myself trying to self-diagnose myself. I thought I had just about anything, because it seems as if the majority of symptoms of diseases tend to be the same. I thought I had heart problems, diabetes, cancer, stomach problems, thyroid problems, and everything else I could think of. I convinced myself that something was wrong with me, and that I was going to die....

So how exactly did I cure myself?
Well, my job had cut back on my hours, so I had started to buy sandwhiches mainly because it was cheap and affordable. After eating sandwhiches for a few months, I diced to stop drinking soda too. After about four months of no soda, no junk food, and just sandwhiches, juices and water, I had noticed that I started feeling better. I could write a book with everything that was wrong with me. I was so irritable, felt horrible, looked like sh*t, felt like sh*t, had no energy, felt depressed even though I wasn't, and soo much more it's beyond expanation. I steadily contined my path of eating better. I began to have more energy, my anxiety disappeared, I was healthier looking, and was sleeping better... ALL because of what I ate and drank....

What people fail to actually realize is that drinking sodas, and eating fast foods with grease, and loads of sugar, salt, etc.... Actually throws your chemical brain imbalances off.. My physical symptoms were very much real, but it's the bad food that did it for me, and heres how it played out....

Drank soda's constantly > gave me anxiety > made my heart race > made me obsesse about my phsyical sympyoms > gave me sleep deprivation > made me fatigued after a few hours > irritable.

Eating bad food > gave me anxiety > made my heart SLOW down(this wasn't good!) > made me fatigued > sick to my stomach > gave me depression > gave me sleep deprivation > irritable > angry > allergies.

Sleep deprivation > made me partially a sociopath > a narcissist > pathological liar > mild form of schizophenia > irritable > angry > annoyed > shut myself off from the world > I slowly began to loose my mind.

Im sorry if this is all kinda thrown together, but if I actually wrote everything from A-Z, it would take an hour for everyone to read it all..

Bottom line is that harmful foods and drinks due play a major part in your way of life. They can affect the way you properly function and think. For the people who believe that something is wrong with them: I did, and for years on that. Some people are more proned to certain things. If you have anxiety, it's most likely the cause of something else. Stop drinking sugar drinks, they help contribute to a form of Hyperactivity.

I never imaged that it could actually be possible for me to make all of this happen in my mind, but it wasn't me, it was the chemical addictives within the foods and drinks you eat. When you try to search out a disease you might have, first try the root of the problem. Sometimes these things go unregarded, but play a major role..

I hope this helps.. Wrote it kinda fast, didn't proof read... no need to respond, because I wont check this again, just wanted to let people know the truth.. maybe it could help

I've had the same lump feeling problem for years with my neck. I thought for the longest time that it may be caused by anxiety feelings or acid reflex. But after thinking about it, it seemed as though the doctor made that diagnosis about anxiety based on the 'lump feeling' everyone gets when they are scared of telling their parents they just drove the car into a ditch.

Two years ago, I decided to take a friends recommendation and tried using a good chiropractor to fix issues with tension in my neck and back. the chiropractor told me that there are muscles and nerves in places that for whatever reason will control the issues I've had with my neck. I was sceptical, but didn't give a dam and committed myself to regular treatment. I started noticing a difference within the first two weeks (6 visits) that my back started getting better, but then noticed a bunch more...

My anxiety issues were non-existant. Rare moments of dizzy spells were going away, and my neck (and throat issues) were depleting and gone!
I maintained regular bi-weekly visits with the chiropractor to keep my spine in shape and my neck straight. I had no idea I was that out of sorts and that it caused so many body issues.

I haven't been to the chiropractor in about 10 months now due to a change in my benefits thru work, but I'm going back in a week cause the symptoms are coming back. I'm going to pay the amount to keep with the treatments cause there really should have never been a price tag on my feeling healthy. I went thru 10 years of feeling messed in the throat by that, and it was as simple as straightening out my middle and upper back.

i recommend to find a good chiropractor and STAY WITH THE SCHEDULED TREATMENTS. It can only do good. I feel it saved my life.

Yes, that is happening to me.
I have acid reflux. It is a bad thing to have. I hate it personally.

I have a lump-feeling in my thoat.
The thing is;
When you have acid reflux, it can mess with your brain.
It "wants" you to think it's swelling.
Your worried about it, and YOU are telling your brain that you have a swelling throat.

The best thing to do is;
- Try to relax
- Chew some sugar free gum
- Put HOT water in your mouth, look up, and swallow. (It will make your throat feel better)

Remember, you are telling your brain that something is wrong.
After I noticed this, It really helped. I never actully had a lump in my throat. The worst thing is, that you will still feel it until you go to sleep.
If you wake up in the morning, and it is still there, then try:

- Eating SOFT foods like soup (Banana's are best)
- Drinking ALOT of liquids.

And yes, I get scared too, but remember, that only makes it worse.

When you feel it will be choking you, or making you stop breathing. Just say to yourself "It is not there," take a REAL deep breath, and relax.

HI

I have been reading all these posts. I too have had and am having a swollen throat area but maybe milder than some of all the other writers. My condition used to be very prevalent with me since I was about 20 but in recent years I noticed it went away mostly, and last year it came back in the mid summer and now it came back last week. I really am doing my best to figure this out. The only effect on me is that it makes talking "rougher" and I have to strain more to talk. I can breathe fine and no hives etc.

I have never had any allergies to anything that I know of or had suspect of except for maybe this throat thing. But I have been paying attention to what I eat and do, and since it comes and goes , maybe I have some clues.... Because of my living situation last several years I havnt been able to cook fish at home and I rarely eat fish out. But last summer I ate at the same place about 3 or 4 times in a 4 week period and had shrimp each time as I was trying to get used to it. Thats when I had that throat thing. I stopped all fish and the throat problem went away in a few weeks. Last week I ate a packet of salmon which I rarely do, but also ate some tuna fish a couple days earlier. Not much else in my life has changed. So it might be a long shot but I think its not really an allergie but a bodily reaction to something with the fish. I have a theory that something builds up in my body and causes the throat problem. Oh and another important fact is that vigourous exercise makes it worse. I can hardly talk at all until I rest up a lot. I have never asked doctor about this but I will next time I go. What do you think? Its all I can come up with so far. Its really annoying when I try to talk to people and they wonder why I am straining. Thanks.

Your sister should go to an ent doc asap her throat may be swollen for many reasons. I am going through the same thing now no answers yet but the doc prescribed me to nexium I must warn you the side effects may be difficult to deal with but it can help make it easier to swallow food and drinks. nexium is mostly used for acid reflex but you can use it if you have difficulty swallowing. Tell your sister she must eat and drink or it gonna mess with her mind even more. Good Luck and God Bless

hi Ive had the lumpy throat feeling for almost a yr. not sure what it came from ive had a few things going on. Ive tried tons of home remedies some helped relieve it others didnt. felt like my throat was gonna block. cbc was fine, this morning i went and i have been takin vitamins on a reg basis. I had some vitamin e gel caps. I poked a hole in the liquid of the vitamin. Instead of swallowing as a reg vitamin i sucked the liquid so it got my throat instantly. within a few hours the swelling sensation was gone. my limit was 2 this morning. im not sure if its gone away yet, will play around with it til its all gone. but ive felt 100 % percent better than i have in a long time. My throat is starting to feel normal. chrissy i did 2- 400 ius.

Wow, reading this almost makes me want to cry. Knowing that I'm not the only one who's experiencing this is such a comfort. Here's my story:

About 3 months ago I started getting that feeling of "being strangled". My throat would become so tight it almost felt like I was having an anaphylactic reaction, except it would never swell all the way shut. For these several months it comes and goes throughout the day. I too initially thought cancer (or something really bad) because I've ever had any allergies (besides itchy eyes to some animals) and thought it would be strange to develop something so severe at 22. I realized through process of elimination that some things make it way worse, first and foremost cheap perfumes. When I stand around someone that's wearing a lot of perfume it seems to make the tightness 10 times worse. I also live in the 1st floor of an apartment, which is partially underground, and have a cat. I thought that maybe the throat swelling was caused by one of those factors, but the "being choked" sensation happens in random places too..like my car or when I'm sitting in class at nursing school. I don't have health insurance so I feel like I'm at a dead end. None of my friends or family understand what I'm going through, and it has me in a constant state of worry. I know it's not cause by anxiety because I'm any different state of stress then I have been the past 4 years; I'm in my senior year of college. Some things cause minimal temporary relief, like hot tea, and standing outside in the fresh air, but that's about it.

Well, bottom line - reading this thread has at the very least given me some peace of mind knowing that I'm not the only one going through this, and maybe one day I'll find the answer I'm looking for. God bless you all and I'll continue praying for myself along with all the others out there in the same scary situation.

Everyone I think I know what some of you may have! ! :-D I had the same problems and still do. I have throat swelling, hives, allergic reactions to food and other items I never did before. I also had severe stomach problems as well. I've been in and out of the ER barely able to breathe. I feel all of your pains. At first I thought it was anxiety, nope. Reflux, nope. Mono/throat cancer/thyroid, nope. Luckily I'm in the military and my insurance is free. I finally saw an awsome doctor in Oklahoma City and he figured out what it was. I have a rare disease called MASTOCYTOSIS (systemic). So little people have it (many think a lot more people have it but a lot of doctors don't know what it is) so therefore is not diagnosed. Anyway look it up on Wikipedia and the Mastocytosis Society. I'm not saying everyone has this but I think the people with the skin rashes and the severe unkown allergies should find a doctor who can test for it. I'm not going to explain everything about the disease but I'll let you guys lookup the above info. If you are in the Oklahoma City area go see a gastro doc named Dr. Miner. He is an expert and can tell you if it's a mast cell problem or not. The only way is to do a special biopsy. This is a terrible disease and I'm just trying to stay in the military but I feel a lot better knowing what it is. I have to whatch what I eat, how long I exercise, and I have to take Benedryl and claritin everyday all day and it keeps the symptoms under control halfway well. I wish you the best of luck. Try to find a good doc that knows about mast cells. It took almost 6 months of constant almost daily doctors appointments and almost going insane. Hope this helps. God Bless you all. Joe

Shalom to all!

While it's reassuring to find out that I'm not the only one dealing with this affliction, it doesn't provide any relief.

After 6 months of this thick, sticky, yuch, accompanied, in my case by swollen lymph nodes, glands, etc., chronic pain, and what appears to be a pocket of some sort in my throat which collects the last bite of whatever I've eaten, I've been blessed with a solution, at least to the mucus part.

A friend related to me a story of a grandson who was born compromised with this phlegm, and was led to give him homeopathic antimonium tartaricum (30c). I got some and started taking it. After the first dose, the phlegm started to lighten, and that night was the first I didn't have to get up 5 or 6 times in the night to empty the pocket in my throat of its nasty load of mucus. I did a 3 day lymph cleansing fast, which seems to have begun the process of reducing the swelling in my neck, and have been applying lavender/lemon oil topically, which seems to be helping, as well.

Can't guarantee the same for anyone else, but it seems to be helping me.

May you all be blessed in your path of restoration from this attack from the dark side,
David

Ok I've ben having this throat swelling for over four months now. I am really sick of it! I am gonna give a little list of my symptoms to see if anyone else is experiencing the same things. I figure if we get all of our symptoms, triggers, and a detailed list of medications or other thoughts we may get to the bottom of this. I have read tons of websites about this. All the people have gone to numerous doctors for all kinds of tests and doctors weather they are in Canada, America or China all say well maybe anxiety or stress. Well yes i am sure i am stressed and maybe i do have anxiety, but this answer seems like a cop out to me! I have been reading symptoms for weeks now and this thing could be anywhere from a drug reaction to cancer to hiv. Its a pretty big list to just say oh well its stress or anxiety. I wanna know what is wrong with me and I want this to stop it is to darn scary.

Ok here is a list of the meds I am on
oxycodone HCI 10mg - ( for sore back and all my joints for that matter)
supedol - oxycotin 10 mg (also for back long acting med)
Gen-metoprolol tartrate 25 mg ( for heart condition SVT)
pregabalin - lyrica 75 mg (for nerve pain steming from back)
zopiclone 7.5 mg (sleeping pill)

Is anyone else taking any of these medications and getting this throat swelling????

Ok another thing i notice is that i get this feeling more when i'm on the couch in my living room where i spend most of my time. I usually get this feeling more at night. But right now it is 8am and i am on the couch and getting it right now. I am sort of thinking MOLD I moved into this place about 3-4 months ago I was experiencing this feeling a little bit at the old place but it was a moldy basement suite so??? this place I come to find out had a grow op at one time so there is signs of mold around the house and all the windows are always wet and moldy. I guess people who lived here before didn't pay rent for like 6 months because their kids were sick from mold. I have talked to the lying landlord and he has finally agreed to get a mold test done on the house. I am gonna ask my doc today to send me to a allergy doc to see if i am maybe allergic to mold.

Also i had back surgery in july and i just came to find out that the blood tests afterwards showed a sign of infection (its nice how i just found this out yesterday from the surgeons receptionist and its now november) could this maybe have something to do with it??

I haven't been sleeping well ............when i finally do get to bed I toss and turn all night even when i take a sleeping pill. The blankets and every way i lay seem to make me uncomfortable. I have been sleeping in really late to as i don't go to bed until really late.

I haven't been getting really any exercise because of the bulged discs in my back and sore neck that I have had for years. I am lazy now i'm gaining weight and pretty much just stay at home. I'm not really to over weight for my height I'm 6'4" and 235.

My heart condition that i was diagnosed with may be a factor in all this too. I have been told i have SVT Supra ventricular tachardia and that i need surgery on my heart. Its an extra circuit i am told that they need to go into my heart and burn out this third circuit. I do notice that when my neck swells I have a really hard heart beat. I have had high blood pressure for years now and I also think this may be part of it. I actually checked my blood pressure the other night when my throat was swelling and it was like 160/80/40 my pulse was really low 40 is way to low it should be around 60+ is anyone else experiencing high bp when this is happening???

I was also reading that the oxycodone could be causing this some people have reactions to the drug and experience the throat swelling, sensitivity to light, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, confusion, feeling light-headed I have experienced all of these a time or two. I have stopped taking them for the last two days still experiencing throat swelling

also with this swelling i have been feeling a twitch in my right eye anyone else?????

I am totally stressed, my girlfriend totally stresses me out, I don't know if she is the cause of if me getting angry at everything she does is a side effect. I have never really had anxiety but it does run in my family. I have it lately though everytime my neck swells. I have gotten to the point where i don't even really leave the house I feel so crappy all the time. And if the mold is causing this it's probably not good to stay here. I actually went to my uncles cabin for two weeks a while back and i can't really remember feeling the throat swelling to much. this could be no mold and the fact that i was away from my stress (the grilfriend lol) who knows???

Well sorry for rambling but i am trying to get out most of my symptoms and problems to see if they are the same as anyone else????
Oh yeah i forgot i've been getting cold chills in my feet and hands to which also can be from the oxycodone. And with the heart and the neck swelling i've been getting numbness in my left arm and my fingers. Ok i'll stop typing now if you hav e any of these problems the same as me email me and well chat about it thanks luke

Wow, I'm so glad I looked up throat swelling after I was just sick of feeling this discomfort. It does come and go, but it this time, it has done it enough times for me to finally snap and look into it more.

At first, just here recently Monday (December 7, 2009), I felt it was just because I was nervous. This is only because I sing, trying to be a singer, I'm a 15 year old girl, so my goal is to become a singer when I'm older. I don't have very much confidence at all. So when they are finally all up, it doesn't take very much at all to break it all down. So that actually makes me start thinking and creating a scenario in my head and causing me to mess up at everything I am normally good at. I have had this problem with the knot feeling in my throat before. I always thought it was nervousness that caused it when I was younger and now, like I was afraid to sound bad and all that. But anyways Monday I started choir and at that point is where it started again. So it's been having me down a lot recently.

I haven't been to a doctor yet, though I have mentioned to my mom about it, she thinks it's nervousness because I don't feel it all the time. But, I still want to have a doctor check it out so maybe I have a better chance figuring out what's wrong...if there's anything wrong.

I have discovered cough drops help soothe it well for as long as you have it in you're mouth, and probably 15 minutes at most after it has gone or you have taken it out of your mouth, so there is my own advice for some relief. So, I hope that will help.

And thanks to that one person who had mentioned about it being a virus, with the brushing teeth and keeping yourself healthy, I don't as often only because my life is very chaotic right now and I never really remember to, I don't like that I skip it a lot, it feels terrible! I feel terrible. I do here and there, so I'll brush my teeth every night and see how that works, if it stops. I'll try hard to remember anyway.

As for what else I feel, I would just sometimes feel pressure in my nose and ears not exactly painful pressures but just plain painless pressure and I get headaches easier and more often than normal. I have considered allergies, so definitely, but problem lies...I don't know.
