i have periphreal neuropathy since november 2008 and its now april. none of the regular meds working so i read that topamax helps some people, i was on topamax before for bulimia so i knew the drug, i am wondering since they dont have a cuase for the neuropathy , that maybe i had it all along, and the topamax kept it at bay. i was hospitalized in november for suicide attempt. just want to know what people think

Hi Torey, thanks for your post. That is too bad that you have been going through so much over the last year. Are you currently in counseling for the November incident? Do you have a strong support system nearby to help you with some of the emotional stuff you are dealing with?

Regarding the Topamax, it is normally a seizure medication that affects the chemicals in the brain that help to reduce the seizure activity. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches. It will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will not treat a headache that has already begun. Some of the side effects of Topamax are suicidal thoughts and tendencies as well. I believe it could have kept the neuropathy at bay but only a doctor can tell you for sure. It could of, however, caused some of your other problems. Best to talk to your doctor as soon as you can. Good luck.
