topamax chin acne

I am 16 years old and my doctor prescribed me with topamax (twice daily 25 mg). The problem is that I always had very clean skin and never had acne, although all my friends did. However, since I am on topamax, acne on my chin have occurred. Could topamax be the cause?

I really do not think topamax is the cause for chin acne. For example, topamax suppresses apetite, so people tend to loose weight on it, but it does not cause acne. Topamax also causes some memory problems with word finding difficulty, which can be problematic for children and adolescents who are in school. You say you are 16 years old… I think this is a period when people usually get acne. It doesn’t matter you had clean skin before … this is a time you hormones jump like crazy and it is very normal to get acne. Best to treat it is to consult with dermatologist. One of home advices, do not squeeze acne, do not apply correctors on it, do not clean your skin too much, do not smoke- cigarettes are a serious cause for acne. I was smoking and had problems with acne on my face and back. As soon as I stopped, my acne situation got much better. I am still under quite an influence from quitting :-) so, if you are a smoker, think about it…

It is a very well known fact that even adults well into their 60's that have not had acne since their teens experience chin acne with topamax. I am 30m and have not had acne since I was 15, I have had clear gorgeous skin my entire 20's and 2 months after beginning topamax my chin acne is disgusting. My boyfriend calls me 'acne face'! Of course, I already knew to expect this I had researched the drug so well before deciding to start it. I realized that not all side effects happened to every person but that this was a very common one and there was a good chance it could happen to me as well. Hope this helps.

I'm a 40 yr female and when I first started taking adult acne treatment Topiramate I developed some acne on my chin and chest as well. I was not prepared for it though. I had not been informed about it and even though I had done a great deal of research about the drug, no where did I find acne listed anywhere as a side effect. Even now as I search the internet this is one of the few sites I have found to link Topamax and pimples. The acne has since gone away now as my body as gotten used to the dosage and only reappeared when my doctor increased the dosage and again in time, once my body adjusted, it eventually disappeared. I hope the same will happen for you as well. :-)

Thanks for your reply, this is very encouraging for those of us who are trying to decide whether to stop taking it because of the acne or to hang in there waiting for it to hopefully go away once the body adjusts to it. How were you treating it? Hydrocortisone? Else? Thanks!

I am 41 years old and just started taking topomax and my chin is breaking out very bad. I have never had an acne problem. It is getting worse everyday!

I'm 64 and I to have a new pimple every morning. I inject it with cortisone and by the next day, it's gone, but then a new one pops up. I never had acne as a teenager. I 've been on Topamax for a couple months now and have lost 18 pounds, which I love, but I have the acne. Hopefully, my body will adjust to the Topamax.

YES.... I started taking this medication in combination with another for weight-loss per my endocrinologist's prescription - just in the last 6 months and I have developed acne on my neck and under my chin - and I have NEVER had this issue before. They are large welt-like pimples. I am 45 and this is just insane.

It was such a great medication for me - EXCEPT THE HORRIFIC ACNE. I’m still mad about it. I mean, losing words amd getting lost while driving in my own neighborhood weren’t great either, but those improved with a decreased dose where the acne didn’t. Just hD to stop using it it was so bad.
