How is topamax reacting with opiates?

Loading...

I am sure not good : )
Topamax is anti - antiepileptic drug, prescribed to control seizures. Opiates are on other hand any drug (medicine) that contains opium or any of its derivates (heroin is also opiate) and acts sedative and narcotic, which could be in contradiction with antiepileptic drug. I would sincerely not recommend mixing topamax with opiates. The exact way that Topamax works is unknown. Besides, topamax is not recommended to interact with sedatives (and opiates act sedative).

My doctors all know what prescription meds I take. I have been on Topamax for over 5 years with no complaints. I have taken Vicodin as needed for various procedures (dental work and surgery) without any problems. Then as my M.S. progressed my doctor gave me Rx Vicodin daily. I haven't had any seizures since I've been on Topamax. Many times I take a half a pain pill and take the other half 2-4 hours later. This kind of dosing makes me feel less sedated.
