Hey,
Today as I went to wake up my mom I saw near her my dad's (age 49) strange behaviour while sleeping. He breaths about 5-10times and then for 20-40 seconds he doesnt, he is trying to take but it looks like something blocks him from breathing, after 20-40seconds he starts breathing like he was about to die, breathing insanely fast for about 10times and this repeats over and over again, this is how he sleeps. He is tired all day and many times he just fells asleep during the day, if he sits alone he'll just sleep, while watching tv or just doing random things. Can anyone tell me what is this ? Especially while sleeping, this has to be bad, not taking air for so long time regularly is deadly isnt it ? I'd like to know the name of this disease and if there's any solution. Thank you alot, and sorry that I'm pretty much clueless, just made a user now, don't know much about these things.

Hello, thanks for sharing you story here. I heard about these conditions that people have and they have so much trouble sleeping. Most of them dont even know that they breathe like that when they sleep. Your dad might have something call Deviated Septum, which is basically a deformation in his nose thats causing him to breathe like that. That is why he is tired throughout the day, he actually does not rest while he sleeps, he gets more tired because of his body constantly fighting for air. The thing you could do is to go to the local pharmacy and buy those little patches (menthol) that you put on your dads nose when he goes to sleep. They are basically cheap patches that help prevent snoring. It might work, you should try. Let me know how that goes.

can you please link me a "little patch" ? Any google picture or site is good. This could be something with his nose, because it looks like he tries breathing tru the nose but its like... "tick tick tick" like something blocks it, then breaths from the mouth. This patch is closing the nose so he can only breath with his mouth ? Thanks for the reply!

Can anyone tell what causes my boyfriend to start shaking in the middle of his sleep and he can't breathe? It's the first time it's ever happened.
