What are the symptoms of cytomegalovirus infection? Are they specific and how can be diagnosed? I’m interested in efficacy of valcyte in treatment of cmv infection but also in its use in herpes virus infections. What are the risks of using valcyte? Is it safe to use it in pregnancy?

Valcyte is antiviral agent that should be used only in situations when its benefits outweigh possible risks. Valcyte has risk to cause cancer and is potentially teratogenic. Indications of this antiviral drug are treatment of eye infections in patients that are immunosupressed with aids. It is also used in prevention of cmv infection in patients that had organ transplantation. So it is not commonly used in therapy of viral infections. Infections caused by cmv are usually asymptomatic, in healthy people these infections are milder than common colds and don’t require treatment.
