To the last poster: For some, like me, the conditon is the syndrome.. I dont have polycystic ovaries i have polycistic ovarian syndrome.

Im not overweight but i do have excess body hair, very long anovulatory cycles and a very high sex drive. I tried for two years then gave up for a year and am about to start ttc again. Using only metformin so far as Im a type one diabetic (not type 2) and the metformin helps me to use less insulin (lowering insulin resistance).

I was drinking soy and eating allot of tofu a few months ago and it affected my cycle (made it shorter) and I got scared so I stopped, ive dont a bit more research and some say that soy has contraceptive qualities and some say it helped them with fertility.. Im not sure yet but ive gone back on the soy and I can tell its done something to my eostrogen levels!

Im back on folic acid, iron tablets and drinking soy.

I've been diagnosed with PCOS 4 years ago, Ive pushed the doctor as my symptoms got very bad. No period for 6 months, lots of pin, I've gained a lot of weight and couldn't lose it, excessive hair growth everywhere, lots of acne etc. The doctor gave me the pill to regulate my period, i took it for 3 months and everything got worse so I stopped. The doctor told me there is nothing she can do to help, so I researched and did the following:
1. Traditional Chinese Medicine - I got herbal remedies and had acupuncture for 8 weeks once every week. I got my period back after the first 3 weeks treatment - proper ones not just the brown discharge! My period has been regular since, although weak at times.
2. Vitex Agnus Cactus - I've taken 2 different kinds, the first one didn't do anything - important to research where you get it from! I took the second one for 3 months. I've lost my excess weight - last year and have been keeping it off without any major lifestyle changes. No more acne either.
I'm going to try Saw Palmetto next and Vitex together as my excessive body hair is not going away.

By the way Vitex is also very good for PMS and depression/mood swings, my teenage daughter had a problem nd lots of cne, so I gave it to her too.

I hope this helps.

Hi. I'm 17. Does this help teenagers too? I've been recently diagnosed with PCOS, but my case is so abnormal and so strange that the OBG-YN says I'll never conceive, and they suspect that I've had it since I was 13...Though no one would take me because I was a virgin. I'm always in pain, its like my cysts are rupturing 24/7. My periods last anywhere from 3-6 months. No stopping. Heavy.

The message above is not entirely true. I've had PCOS for 10 years. I started Vitex a few weeks ago and it's already helping me. I do excersise and eat a little bit better, but good herbs like Vitex help in so many areas where you really need it for PCOS. When you are ready to start having children, Vitex levels out all your estrogen and progrestone levels so that you ovulate normally. You could just loose weight but it doesn't mean that your hormones are leveled out. There might not be a "quick fix", but Vitex definately helps most everyone i've ever talked to about it. Good luck :-D

I mean is there ever a quick fix to any health problem ??? I have had pcos for 14 years, and it like any other health problem got worse over the years left untreated. At the start of my condition I weighed 120lbs and at being diagnosed I weighed 190lbs, and now I weigh 241 lbs. I played sports my whole life through out high school and college, and I now have had a personal trainer, a dietician, several specialists for 3 years I have lost 5lbs !!!!!! I wish that eating right and exercise would work for me but the fact is that everyone is different and although they arent sure about the main cause of pcos the line is divided some belive that it is weight induced, and the other side belives it is gentic!!!! There are plenty of people with pcos that arent heavy and the fact that my sister and I both have it and she hasnt gained weight leaves me to belive that it is more gentic again thats my opinion and you are of course intitled to yours :-) I dont like it when people automaticly say its a 'fat' condition caused by people who dont exercise and eat right because thats def not the case with my sister and myself. I have hair on my face that I joke and say my "man bread" and that I am in a race with my husband to see who can grow it quicker, but the truth is I am not soposed to have a bread and it SUCKS !!! I have high levels of estrogen, prolactin, testostrone, and low progestrone as with anyone people with pcos just I want some relief and some hope that things will and can get better. my husband and I have been ttc for 8 long years. I have been through 3 surgeries countless fertility treatments with nothing but heartache. I have been to many doctors that have given me a death sentence on conceving because of the severity of my pcos, but I am not willing to give up just yet :-) I have heard nothing but wonderful things about vitex soooo I done a lot of research on it and I have now been taking it for 3 days!! I hope to loss some weight, and regulate all these crazy hormones, and conceive my first child!!!!! I wanted to say thank you to everyone that posted information on vitex and how it has or hasnt helped them. I am planning on starting a blog for my progress once i get that up and running I will post the link here for all those interrested. I would love to here your story if you have pcos and used vitex and are ttc good or bad I wish everyone luck !!!!! :-)

I was just diagnosed with PCOS. When I asked my doctor about how to fix it he said "Lose weight although it's almost impossible." (I'm a pretty heavy person). When I asked about fertility he said you can't conceive, there is NO cure or remedy. After that crushing blow he spread his hands apart in mock sympathy, shrugged his shoulders and said "Life's not fair".
I am so glad I found this blog. It makes me feel better about having PCOS and knowing that treatments are available. I am going to try another Doctor and some of the herbal remedies mentioned here (after some research).
Thank you so much!

hi

i am 36 and was diagnosed with pcos 6 years ago but always had irregular periods since started at 15, i concieved and had my child early at 17 so for me concieving is not my problem. i have been on contraceptive pills to regulate my peroiods and control my hormones up until a year ago when i had a suspected mini stroke. after tests they discovered that it was a severe type of migraine attack and have less severe but still bizarre scarey attacks to date. i am no longer allowed to take contraceptive pills as am at high risk of an actual stroke so have the col for contraceptive. recently my hormone levels have been absolutely mad and feel like i have extreme pmt constantly to the point that i am being unable to cope with every day life. the doctors have no solutions (apart from anti depresents) so am looking for alternative remedies, would appreciate any advice about anything that will help with my extreme hormone imbalances.

Hello... I know this post is from last year but I was just reading and wanted to make a comment:) I've had irregular periods my entire life! I will go 3-6 months without a period and then have one that lasts for 2 months(horrible I know):( So anyway... I just wanted to say that I've seen so many doctors about this and they all tell me the SAME thing... Take this pill, take that pill... This pill will make it better, this pill with work! Blah, blah, blah!! They don't work and they only have made things worse. Last year I was diagnosed with PCOS and was told that I probably could not get pregnant without fertility drugs, metformin, and ivf. I tried everything... and guess what, it only made me sick:( My husband and I started trying to have kids 3 yrs ago and nothing... Not even the fertility drugs helped... Nothing. A few months ago I decided no more medications and being sick everyday was not worth it! I started taking Vitex(chaste tree berry), Dong Quai, and Saw Palmetto(in the herbal tincture form), about a month ago. A month later I was pregnant! I'm not sure if it was the herbs or it was God... But hey, I guess it doesn't hurt to try! I always say organic is better and there really is a natural cure for everything!:) Good luck to you all!!:)

I would highly recommend reading The PCOS Diet book by Collette Harris as well as her other books on the matter.  I have been taking a blend of Sand Ginseng, Indian Bread, Licorice Root, Wild Yam, Red Dates, Tangerine, Tang Kuei, White Poney, Spotted Lily, Milk-Vetch, Fresh Ginger given to me by a herbalist.  I also feel like the diet in The Beauty Detox Diet by Kimberly Snyder is infinitely helpful - that helps me no longer be bloated and lose the pesky weight associated with PCOS.

hi, i just want to say that some women with pcos actually DO exercise and eat a healthy diet. i have been a vegan for 4 years, i get regular exercise, and my BMI is on the low end of whats considered to be a healthy weight for my height. i get so annoyed with people who generalize about this condition bc i, for one, do everything RIGHT. some women with pcos absolutely need to change their diet/exercise habits, as nothing else can substitute for that. but thats not to say that vitex and other herbs cant also helpful.
