My daughter is 18 years old, almost 19. She started taking YAZ when she was 16. I am very concerned. Over the last six months or so she has had a multitude of symptoms. We contributed most to having just gone off to college. However, they are not getting any better. She has had some for years, but thought there were stress related due to being a victim of a crime. Her current symptoms are:
1. Shortness of breath and a cough that won't go away
2. Fatigue - constantly tired
3. Weight Loss - she was already thin and wasn't trying to loose
4. Vomiting
5. Muscle aches and twitching
6. Mood changes - severe depression
7. Stomach cramping
8. Low pulse rate
She just plain feels awful. After seeing a commercial last night from YAZ about how the FDA said that they need to correct some the "misconceptions". They talked about high potassium levels especially when used with NSaids...which my daughter uses due to severe cramping and lately because of the muscle aches.
She went to the doctor the other day, before I saw the comerical, and they are running a bunch of blood tests. I phoned her this morning and told her that I wanted to know exactly what her postiumm level is and that she needs to talk to her daughter concerning the potential risk of hyperkalemia. This has terrified me and I want an answer. I will post again once we know if Yaz is the cause. My hunch it is!!!

I am 33 and in good health. I have never smoked, I do not drink. I exercise regularly.
I started taking Yaz in May of 2008 (at age 32) for vicious PMS - and to all of you who caution about reading the side effect warnings - I did, and I discussed them with my Ob/Gn...reading does not stop them from occurring.
On November 10, 2008 (day before 33rd Bday) I had numbness in my right arm, could not get my hands to do what I wanted them to do, could not articulate what was going through my mind and could not see what was in front of me.
My parents were visiting and I managed to tell my mom I need a hospital. I was taken by ambulance to the ER.
I had an MRI and EKG - they also did an ultrasound of my arteries which were deemed "squeaky clean". All tests were normal and the ER said I did not have a stroke, TIA/mini-stroke, or heart attack. They told me they didn't know what it was and to take a baby aspirin daily and follow up with a neurologist.
The neurologist told me it was a "funky migraine" (hemi-plegic). I have only had one other migraine in my whole life - Oct 1999. He tested my cholesterol (which was outstanding) and homocysteine (also great results). His nurse practitioner told me to continue with baby aspirin, but could not tell me why as I don't have factors that deem it necessary and in fact, according to Mayo Clinic web info, should not be on it b/c it increases my chance of "bleeding stroke" vs "blockage stroke".
So, my questions are -
1. What kind of Dr. do you recommend I follow up with? Could the ER and neurologist (who saw all tests) have missed a stroke or TIA?
2. It has been nearly 3 months, if I had in fact developed a blood clot, would it have broken free by now, or could it still be there?
Thank you to all who have posted and provided support and answers.

I tried many BC pills and always had an emotional experience. Even tried the shot. Big Mistake...gained 30 pounds in two months and would cry uncontrollably. So I tried yaz about a year ago. However, I recently went off yaz...I was so happy with it except that my sex drive basically turned for the worse. I didn't want to even think about sex! But yet I had no more cramps...no more acne...my skin was beautiful...and I had no mood swings at all. But I felt guilty about my sweetheart...and then started noticing a tingle in my arms and then eventually a weird numbness. Considering all the facts about any birth control I knew there was a possibility that these symptoms were from yaz. So I stopped. Sad and happy...I have gained my sex drive back...no more numbness in my arms...but my skin sucks again. Is there any hope out there? Obviously my health is more important than my skin but is there some pill other than yaz and ortho that can help acne with out emotional side effects? I don't want to turn into some crazy !@#$% because of some synthetic hormone. I just want protection and my pretty skin back.

I was taking Yaz for two months and developed blood clots in my legs that moved into my lungs. I've taked to many other women since who have similar experiences. I think this pill is very dangerous.

I took YAZ from May to November 2008. In October 2008, I was experiencing severe pain in my right side. After several tests, they found the blood clot in my right ovarian vein. My doctor immediately took me off of YAZ and started blood thinners.

I just started Yaz last week, and after reading all of your comments I am starting to get really concerned. I was just wondering for all of you that had blood clots and embolisms, were you previously tested for Factor V? I'm not really sure what that is, but when speaking with my pediatrician (I'm 19) I expressed my concern about blood clots and birth control. She had me get tested for Factor V, which she explained to me if you test positive for it you are at high risk for blood clots and should NOT be on the pill ( I would google this for more info because I know that I did not explain that well here. I'm sure you would know if you were tested for it, though, because your doctor has to specially order the test) . I went and got tested for it, and the results came back negative and I went ahead and started the pill. Were any of you tested and came back negative, but still got the blood clots? Also, do you smoke? I am not a smoker so my risk should be lower, but that may not mean anything if the people here who had blood clots were non-smokers. I am very concerned right now, especially since I am experiencing mild chest pain which prompted me to find this forum. Please let me know.

I was in the ER the night before last, for back pain, abdominal pain, and stabbing cramps. I was on Depo for 2 years before switching to Yaz for weight control. I have an appt with my gyno on Tuesday, but the ER doc said it might be endometriosis.
Should I be worried about the rest of this?

My sister in law was just admitted to the hospital today due to DVT. As we speak they are dissolving it and hopefully that works but my brother wanted to know about class action law suit also. This is just wrong I can't believe she is 25 and has something like this just because of yaz!

My daughter had a stroke (blood clot in her brain) last July aftering taking Yaz for 5 months. She was 24 at the time and right in the middle of planning her wedding. She could not speak and her company thought she was having a migraine!!!!! Instead of taking her to the emergency room they took her to their doctor that sees worker's comp patients. That doctor treated her for a migraine which made her stroke worse. She was out of work for three months while she went to speech therapy and is now back to work but she was very lucky that she recovered. We also have a friend that knows a 19 year old that just had the same type of stroke and it was from taking Yaz. If you are taking this BCP you run the risk of having something horrible happen no matter what your age. My daughter was very fit (college cheerleader) and never smoked a day in her life. Those of you that have had problems you can contact Erin Brockovich on her website.

My 18 year old daughter got put on Yaz when she was 16 to help with cramps. Shortly after she started all kinds of medical problems. Shortness of breath, migraines that landed her in the hospital. Tachycardia, gastroparesis, gastritis, the tingling hands and feet, and finally blood clots. After the clots they took her off the Yaz (she had been on it for 13 months). We are still dealing with some of the medical issues but they are better than they were. She had every test you can think of to find out what was wrong with her and I now believe it all stemmed from the Yaz. It really helps reading that she isn't alone. Thanks.

I would love to help! I was actually diagnosed with a PE after a few months of taking Yaz. I'm only twenty years old and the duration of my coumadin treatment has yet to be determined.

I had been using yaz for about 6 months when I started to have cramping and pain in the back of my legs. After seeing the commercials about low potassium with yaz, I decided stop taking it. 2 days later, I blacked out while driving to work. Thank goodness I hit a parked car and only broke my arm. After a night in the hospital and thousands of dollars in tests, they could only find that I had low potassium. I have lost my drivers' license until I can get a Dr.'s release.(which I agree with) I will have to go 4 hours away for more tests. I have a gut feeling this was brought on by yaz.

I'm currently in the hospital with a blood clot in my lung courtesy of Yaz. I was on this med for 2 1/2 months to help control my PMDD. A week ago I thought I had a pinched nerve in my back, excruciating pain in my lower back, neck & shoulders. Then shortness of breath. Two days ago the pain in my chest was so intense I tought I might vomit. I will be taking Coumadin for at least the next 6 months.
I'm 43 years old.
Yaz is NOT safe for use.
Good Luck everyone!

Wow, I wish I had known all of this before I went on YAZ. I was told it was low dose, safe and would help with the symptoms I was having through perimenopause....
I was on it from Sept 2008 to Dec 31, 2008 and ended up in ICU for a week with multiple blood clots in both lungs, on Lovinox and then on coumadin for a minimum of three months. My only symptom was becoming terribly short of breath and being mildly asthmatic it was a couple of days before I realized there was more going on than just asthma. There was no pain anywhere, no other symptoms.
To top it off there were 9 other women in the state that we knew of then that were being treated for the same thing, and the only thing we all had in common??? YAZ
