My grandfather is 76 years old and he is still fighting ALS! He has been diagnosed with this disease almost three years now and it seems that the illness is slowly progressing. I know that when we start speaking of weak respiratory system in ALS, things become really serious, all I would like to know is how many years he can hope for.

Well, it seems that your grandfather is not going to forfeit that easily, even if he starts getting respiratory problems. ALS is indeed a serious illness still without known cause (even though doctors discovered a mutation on chromosome 21, factors that are causing the activation of mutation are still unknown). But, there are patients who lived for more then 10 years. So, let us hope that it will be the same case with your grandfather.
