I'm 30 years old.

I was sick last week and coughed a lot. I'm not sure if I aggrivated something or not, but last Thrusday and Friday I felt a dull throb in my right testicle area, pulsing about once a minute or so. I say testicle area, becuse sometimes it felt like it was the testicle aching and sometimes it felt behind and to the right of the testicle, more in the pelvis. Over the weekend, the area was tender, while not pulsing anymore. I would lay or sit down and would feel a little ache every now and again, but hardly frequent. I never was debilitated.

Today, my pain has all but gone away. I'm sitting right now with my legs crossed under me, something I would not have tried over the weekend. It's not that the pain was bad, just I was squemish to aggrivate it. The testicle area still seems a little tender, but does not ache.

Well, now I've got myself worried over what went wrong. I talked to a registered nurse at work today, and she thought it could be an inguinal hernia and that I shouldn't put off seeing a doctor past another day or two if the pain persists. She said most testicular issues or groin pulls should show signs of healing by this point (day 5). Well, I can say there is significant improvement today over the past few days. Again, the pain never was really bad, just alarming that it lasted so long. And, I have done everything I can, poked and prodded to find a hernia and saw nothing.

So, am I pretty safe to rule out testicular torsion by now? I understand that's an emergency issue that's very painful. I assume I would have been in a lot more pain and seeking medical help quickly to avoid losing it. Is there such a thing as a torsion that's just so so painful?

If it is a hernia as the nurse thought it might be, would it be getting better? I would think that would be lasting pain, and I never had any abdominal pain, even with coughing and I sucked in tea and choked tonight with no groin pain.

I'm thankful to be feeling better, but concerned that I have no idea what went wrong. Torsion is disturbing, and I read it can correct itself and come back. Am I worrying over nothing? Do I still need to see a doctor even though the tenderness is all but gone? Should I write it off as a groin pull from coughing through my cold? Could it have been a mild epeditimitus that my body has naturally gotten under control? The internet has made me nervous and question my improvments!

If you can have a groin pull that you feel in your testicles, I'm hoping that's what it was.

It is definitely possible to get a groin pull that you feel in your testicles! I know that it couldn't be testicular torsion because your scrotum would be incredibly tender right now and you would probably be in a pretty bad situation. I think that even though you have largely recovered, the period of time it took for you to get better means you should consider seeing a doctor. I know that it's a pain, but you are in a situation where you could be doing a lot of damage to yourself. It is worth a visit! I hope that you keep us posted on your progress.

I agree, very much, with the previous post. You could be doing a lot of damage by not getting checked..You don't want trouble in that area...if you know what I mean. It sounds like a hernia to me, which I do not believe will cure itself. Don't play with this. I also noticed that you sit with your legs underneath of you. That may not be a good practice for other reasons like good circulation, etc. See a doctor right away so that you don't cause yourself a life-time of problems. Let us know how things work out.

For those interested, I ended up at urgent care tonight. The tenderness and pain returned this afternoon and I decided it was time to get to the bottom of the problem.

It took very little time for the doctor to conclude I had epeditimitus. He had ruled out hernia before he even came into the room. He grabbed each testicle in ways I didn't think was possilbe, and of course the right one was quite sore. I'm on antibiotics now, which should clear this up in a few days. Urine samples came back clean.

There had been increased swelling in the right testicle this afternoon, which I guess due to the antibiotics, seems to have mostly gone down now. I could feel there was something off when walking before, that seems more normal now. But, I believe the infection has enough of an edge still that I'm running a fever now, which was happening even while I was at urgent care. I expect that will subside as recovery goes on.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this. Turns out, you can't run from the devil long when it comes to your privates.

One last thought.

I found it interesting to think 200 years ago, this would have probably killed me. Can you imagine an absessed epydidimus that leads to death? I can't imagine the pain any poor bastards that died from this went through. Thank God for modern medicine.

I'm so glad you were able to find a quick solution to your problem and went to the doctor for it! I know a lot of people hesitate and then they really end up in a bad situation. I think you make a very important point--this could have killed you. It's like enduring just a few embarrassing moments pays off in the long run. Glad to hear you are feeling better!

Hi:
I am glad that you got to the ER for some diagnosis and treatment. How are you doing now? Did your infection clear up completely? I hope so. Please let us know if things worked out. Did the meds you got in ER work or did you have to follow-up with your doctor? I hope that you are doing just fine now and that you will continue to share your experiences with me. I love to continue exchanging information with you. Take care.
