I had a medical abortion about 11days ago at 5weeks 4days gestation. Bleeding has subsided now and breast tenderness has also subsided. But I still have a metallic taste in my mouth. Should I be bothered about this?

Hello, guest.

A metallic taste in the mouth is a known side effect of the medication used in medical abortions. It is caused by the hormone changes that occur during the abortion process. It is not uncommon for some women to experience this symptom for a few days to a few weeks after the procedure.

However, if you are experiencing other symptoms such as fever, severe abdominal pain, or foul-smelling discharge, it may be a sign of a post-abortion infection, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

If the metallic taste in your mouth is the only symptom you are experiencing and it is not causing any discomfort or interfering with your daily activities, it is unlikely to be a cause for concern.

There are a few things you can do to help manage this symptom:

  1. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help to flush out any residual medication from your system, which may help to alleviate the metallic taste.

  2. Chew gum or suck on hard candy: Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy can help to stimulate the production of saliva, which can help to wash away the metallic taste in your mouth.

  3. Brush and floss regularly: Keeping up with your oral hygiene routine can help to reduce the metallic taste in your mouth.

  4. Eat citrus fruits: Citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits can help to stimulate saliva production and may help to reduce the metallic taste.

  5. Be patient: The metallic taste should gradually subside over time as your hormone levels return to normal.
